I've made no secret of my love for Dishonored 2. Those who played the first game when it came out, though, got a major treat and a general boost to their experience playing the sequel. This came from getting to play the DLC for the original Dishonored as it came out rather than after the fact.
Of course, though, with a 2-part DLC story pack for Dishonored that was loved and respected by the fans, it stands to reason that Dishonored 2 will get the same treatment. After Bethesda's announcement earlier today that they will be having yet another showcase at E3, Dishonored fans everywhere had the same thought: more content for us, please.
But where Dishonored was ripe with potential as to where and how they could further explore the story (an assassin who was integral to the plot was still alive and unaccounted for), things are a little less clear in Dishonored 2. The main villain is decidedly defeated, and those who helped her either dead or detained, depending on how you played. So where to go? Let's explore who you could play as and who you could play against.
Potential Protagonists
Emily Kaldwin. Just getting the obvious out of the way, Empress Kaldwin could easily return as the protagonist for any potential story DLC. She was certainly the best way to play Dishonored 2, and, while her arc of finding out the dark side of power and learning to appreciate the important role the crown plays in ruling for the people, there will always be more threats to the crown (we'll go over that in a bit).
It would also be interesting to see Arkane Studios double down on a more high-chaos ending, perhaps with Emily Kaldwin seeking to persecute all Delilah supporters. That would certainly get her into more trouble.
Billie Lurk. *SPOILER ALERT* With Meghan Foster finally revealed as Billie Lurk just before the end of Dishonored 2, that opens up a whole new can of worms ready to explore. With Daud still alive, he and Billie are due to reunite. Plus, it would be nice to get a more full exploration of Billie, as opposed to everyone else's view of her.
Now, Billie's powers are something of an issue. She had limited powers, including teleportation, which is great, but she lost those powers when she left the side of Daud. With Billie being the most likely choice for a protagonist of any subsequent DLC, I don't think Bethesda will make it so you have to play without powers. Perhaps Billie reunites with Daud and finds out how to make it more permanent, or Billie gets marked by the outsider.
One thing, there is a way to play Dishonored 2 and get Billie's arm back, so that will probably be the canon ending. The good news is that no other ending changes the fate of Billie (unless you kill her). She will, no matter what, go off to find Daud.
Potential Villains
Breanna Ashworth. One of the key pieces to Dellilah's coup of the Kaldwin Throne, Ashworth was seemingly dealt with in the non-lethal approach of Dishonored 2, where you took all of her powers. But maybe, she found a way to get them back, as witches are wont to do.
Maybe, futher, a newly emboldened Breanna Ashworth will seek revenge on Emily Kaldwin for defeating Delilah, who may or may not be Breanna's lover. Even if she isn't a foe, herself, the defeat of Delilah could inspire Breanna to orchestrate another attempt against Emily.
Billie Lurk. "Wait, what?" I did say it would be nice if Bethesda doubled down on Dishonored 2's less optimistic endings. What if it's canon that Emily rejected Billie, calling her a monster. Then, Billie reunites with Daud to get her powers back, only to come back against Emily for one more shot.
While this would certainly upset fans, I'm kind of a fan of the tortured villain trope, someone who turns to villainous actions as a way of coping with irreconcilable internal detriments. Billie could, with a few twists, certainly fit that description.
