Role-playing might be frowned upon by the general public, but those who participate often consider it one of the best ways to get the most out of an RPG or sandbox game.
This last weekend I spent time watching a couple livestreams that featured Grand Theft Auto V role-play. Apparently, there are entire communities of people who play GTA Online with the sole intention of pretending that they're the character they've created, going as far as obeying traffic laws and associating their in-game persona with a full-time virtual job whether it be a police officer, taxi driver, or criminal.
That got me thinking: while I've never role-played, I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to the idea in the context of a game like Grand Theft Auto V. As dorky as it was, what I saw looked fun and was often hilarious.
