Tokyo Game Show 2018 is coming up, with the event opening to the public later this month . Though the west may perceive E3 as being the big gaming expo, TGS 2018 is going to be packed with heavy hitters, with developers from across the industry coming together in order to showcase their upcoming releases.
Among the developers and publishers appearing during the expo are SEGA, Capcom, Bandai Namco, and Sony, with each company having a variety of games that will each be featured during the event. We’ve outlined the 20 games we’re most excited to see at the Tokyo Game Show 2018 in the gallery below:
TGS 2018 has a mix of new announcements and highly anticipated games in store, with the likes of Death Stranding set to be prominently featured while highly anticipated heavy hitters such as Dead or Alive 6 and Devil May Cry 5 will also make an appearance. There will also surely be a number of oddities dotted around the show floor, and as illustrated above, we’re inexplicably excited for the release of more low-key games such as Digimon Survive and Team Sonic Racing .
TGS 2018 is the last huge show of the year, with Sony usually keeping a couple of tricks up its sleeve for the Japanese event. With it presenting the general public’s final opportunities to play a bunch of games before they make their way to retail in 2019, western games should be sure to keep it tuned to GameRevolution where we’ll be providing coverage of the event throughout.
Top 20 TGS 2018 Games
Ace Attorney
Capcom will be coming to TGS with a big Ace Attorney announcement, and fans hope that it'll finally see the series land on the Nintendo Switch. We'd love to lawyer it up on the portable console, so we're looking forward to what Capcom has up its sleeve at the event.
Ace Combat 7
The dogfighting series returns with Ace Combat 7 , as Bandai Namco lets us take to the skies once again and duke it out with a bunch of planes. The game's impressive VR mode was showcased in a pre-TGS trailer, and anything that gets using our PSVR again is worth a look. us
Dead or Alive 6
Dead or Alive 6 features a grittier approach than previous entries in the series, drawing less of a focus on its notoriously scantily-clad cast of characters are more on the action. It's high-speed and energetic combat, and while some series vets may be put off by some its changes, we're hopeful that new life has been given to this old series.
Death Stranding
Death Stranding will appear on a stage show at TGS, and after its bizarre E3 2018 showing we certainly need to see some more of it. With Norman Reedus' character basically serving as a post-apocalyptic Amazon delivery man, more questions were raised than answered during the LA expo. Let's hope its TGS appearance offers a little more clarity.
Devil May Cry 5
Dante is back to doing what he does best, with nephew Nero in tow for a game that Capcom has said will be a genre-defining experience. All signs point to a return to form, and we'll see more of it at TGS.
Digimon Survive
Could it be? A genuinely exciting Digimon game? The other monster-catching game hasn't exactly received the same response as Nintendo's Pokemon , but the shift to a survival RPG puts it in line with the likes of Fire Emblem , which can only be a good thing.
Dragon Quest Builders 2
The first Dragon Quest Builders was hopelessly addictive, so we're worried about just how many hours we're going to sink its sequel. TGS should reveal more about this life-consuming crafting RPG.
Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain
The Earth Defense Force series is a guilty pleasure, as while its games can be somewhat of a mess mechanically,
God Eater 3
Giant monsters are the stars of the show in God Eater 3 , and Bandai Namco's anime sequel wants you to go out and take down them all with some appropriately flashy punches and kicks. God Eater 2 was well-received, so this follow-up will hopefully take it up another notch.
Judge Eyes
A new IP from the team behind the Yakuza series, Judge Eyes doesn't look too far removed from the open-world series, though it brings more of a focus on legal proceedings over fists fights. We're behind pretty much anything this studio does, so we can't wait for this one.
Jump Force
Shonen Jump characters brawl with one another in Jump Force , and it's basically to anime what Smash Bros is to Nintendo. We don't know if it'll be as fun as its concept suggests, but it's certainly one of the most exciting fighting games on the horizon.
Kingdom Hearts 3
We've seen a lot of Kingdom Hearts 3 now, but you can never have too much of a good thing. With it having been pushed back into 2019, Tokyo Game Show should feature a few exclusives to keep us adequately hyped until its eventual launch.
Mega Man 11
The Blue Bomber is back! Capcom is having a stellar time of things lately, and Mega Man 11 looks to be an excellent throwback to the retro platforming series.
Project Awakening
Announced during Sony's pre-TGS show, this action RPG looks to be in the vein of the Dark Souls series, with its medieval setting and giant monsters piquing our interest. It looks a lot like Deep Down , though we hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as that canceled game.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
One of GameRevolution's most highly anticipated upcoming games, Capcom has completely revamped this classic for a modern audience, replacing its tank controls with an over-the-shoulder perspective and some gorgeous visuals. We're prepared to get scared all over again.
Samura Shodown
Surprise! Samurai Shodown is making a comeback, with a PS4 entry in the SNK series having been announced during the Sony pre-TGS show. Its art style is very reminiscent of Street Fighter IV , which can only be a good thing, and series' favorites Haohmaru and Nakoruru return with all their ancient weaponry in tact.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
From Software's upcoming action RPG that isn't a Souls game (but looks a lot like a Souls game) was originally intended to be a Tenchu sequel. If that doesn't leave you curious then we don't know what will, and while we still hold out hope for Bloodborne 2 , we're deeply interested in what the studio will do with its feudal Japan setting.
Soul Calibur 6
It has been over six years since the last entry in the series, so fighting game fans are hoping that Soul Calibur 6 is worth the wait. With Geralt from The Witcher popping up as a playable combatant, we're rooting for this to pull the same kind of comeback for Soul Calibur as Capcom managed to pull off with Street Fighter IV.
Team Sonic Racing
If you overlooked Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed , then you should rectify that immediately. Genuinely better than a bunch of Mario Kart games, SEGA's stab at the kart racer was severely overlooked, and with Team Sonic Racing having a hint of Double Dash about it we hope that it's a worthy successor.
Yo-kai Watch 4
The first Yo-kai Watch game to release on the Nintendo Switch, Yo-kai Watch 4 is emblematic of Level-5's decision to pivot towards the home/handheld console hybrid. Unfortunately, there's no western release date on this sequel, but a lot of folks want it to happen so we have to hope we'll be able to play this Pokemon -esque RPG in the near future.
