Everyone owns a mobile phone, but no one likes mobile games. At least, that’s what you’d think from the backlash against game series breaking out onto the platform. Recently, both Diablo Immortal and Alien Blackout have received negative reactions to their announcements. Fans wanted Diablo 4 and got a watered-down version for their iPhone, while Alien: Isolation received an unlikely sequel in which you run away from a low-poly Xenomorph while on the bus.
We can see why people would be frustrated by these games, but there are so mobile sequels that we would like to see. As such, as asked the GameRevolution editorial team to discuss the mobile game sequels they would actually want to play. Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “Advance Wars. Nintendo struck gold with Fire Emblem Heroes, its most successful mobile game to date that isn’t called Pokemon Go, and the turn-based strategy series is ideally suited to mobile. With my 3DS now gathering dust in the back of my cupboard, I’d be happy to experience a new Advance Wars game on my phone if it isn’t set to debut on the Nintendo Switch in the near future.”
Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I wouldn’t mind seeing a variation on Fallout Shelter. It was pretty interesting and not too greedy with the microtransactions and I think it could work as a sequel or as an Elder Scrolls-themed game.”
Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “A sequel to the GBC Pokémon Trading Card Game would be awesome to see on mobile. Hearthstone has proven that card games are best played on phones, with quick touch interactions working incredibly well. Mix in the huge catalog of Pokémon cards and that’d be a winner for me!”
Michael Leri, features editor: “If I had to play a sequel on my phone, it would have to be made for the platform, sensible within the universe, and less mechanically challenging. Something like Super Meat Boy Forever seems like a great idea and has the right ideas in mind. It doesn’t seem to sacrifice what makes Meat Boy great while fitting itself to a new platform. Alien Blackout seems like a bad idea and exactly what I don’t want especially since it wasn’t announced alongside a proper sequel.”
