Best April 2019 Games | Hottest releases on PS4, Xbox, PC, and Switch

With the year already packed with quality games like Resident Evil 2 Remake, Kingdom Hearts 3, Metro Exodus, and Devil May Cry 5, it’s easy for one to assume that 2019’s second quarter won’t bear any noteworthy releases. That’s far from the truth, however, as April alone holds a handful of promising titles to look forward. Zombie fans can anticipate both World War Z and Days Gone to launch next month, while members of the fighting game community should prepare themselves for Mortal Kombat 11‘s brutal fatalities. The following are all the best April 2019 games that PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC users should keep on their radars.

The sequel to 2010’s Super Meat Boy will maintain the challenging gameplay of the original title by introducing randomly generated levels that transform into harder versions whenever players complete them. Thankfully, Meat Boy and Bandage Girl will be able to fight back Dr. Fetus and his goons this time around with stylish dives, slides, and mid-air attacks. The couple means serious business this time.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission will be the first entry in the Dragon Ball Heroes series to release outside of Japan when it launches on April 5 for PC and Switch. It will preserve a lot of the strategic card-based gameplay found in the original arcade title, though players will also get to experience a unique story told from the perspective of Beat, a new hero in the Dragon Ball universe. With over 350 characters to use in battle, it may be difficult for diehard fans of the franchise to put down the game once they’ve added popular Saiyans like Goku and Vegeta to their decks.

Dangerous Driving releases on April 9 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, promising to reintroduce video game fans to the racing genre’s aggressive side. Developed by the same minds behind the Burnout franchise, the title’s modes will heavily revolve around taking down as many competitors as possible before one reaches the finish line. That’s not to mention that up to eight online friends will be able to race on 30 different tracks at launch. With the Forza franchise out of the way until fall, Dangerous Driving may be unique enough to earn itself a large following during 2019’s second quarter.

April 2019 games

Shovel Knight Showdown will allow up to four players the chance to duke it out as their favorite characters from the main game when it releases on April 9 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Switch, Xbox One, and PC. The expansion, which features the likes of Shield Knight, Black Knight, and the Enchantress, includes one-on-one duels, four player free-for-alls, and cooperative team battles. While Showdown will predominantly be a multiplayer experience, fans of solo campaigns may also have incentive to try it out thanks to its inclusion of a story mode for each playable fighter. If Yacht Club Games’ pedigree holds up in 2019, Shovel Knight players will soon have a lot more worthwhile content to consume.

Machine guns, sentries, turrets, rocket launchers, and more will aid users in cutting down these sprinting cadavers, though teamwork is the ultimate key to success. Here’s hoping that Brad Pitt will make an appearance.

Mortal Kombat 11 will preserve a lot of what makes its predecessors fun to play while introducing new features to keep the franchise fresh. These include Fatal Blocks, which are special moves that can only be performed when a user’s health drops below 30 percent; Krushing Blows, which are cinematic variations of special moves; and Flawless Blocks, which open up comeback windows whenever players block with precise timing. The outfit-based Gear system will also make its debut here, which acts in accordance to the customizable move lists that fans configure through the Variation system. Mortal Kombat 11 may have no trouble finding an audience when it releases on April 23 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

Days Gone may maintain the PlayStation 4’s streak of quality exclusives when it launches for the system on April 26. While its zombie premise isn’t new, the game’s open world environments are filled with roaming hordes of “Freakers,” the likes of which comprise of animated human and animal cadavers. This feature, combined with a dynamic weather system and a day-night cycle, may help set the title apart from other survival horror titles today.

Protagonist Deacon St. John’s motorcycle can also be upgraded to enhance its speed, durability, or maneuverability, which is useful in case one finds themselves cornered by a horde or chased by wolves when out on the road. It remains to be seen if Days Gone‘s narrative will keep fans invested, though there’s a chance that heavy emotions will be on display if one of the game’s trailers serves any indication.

Despite the warm weather finally arriving, it’ll be hard to go outside this April with so many games to play. Those who have yet to experience the year’s greatest hits so far should do so before the titles mentioned above release, as each may be promising enough to warrant a playthrough or two. Fans of fighting games, racing games, anime, platformers, and zombies might all have something to occupy them until May 2019 delivers another batch of exciting software. It’s a tough job keeping up with so many titles, but someone’s got to do it.
