Tell GR | What game genre have you never got into?

There are some game genres that, no matter how hard we try, are just never going to stick with us. We feel like we should enjoy them, but after repeated attempts at doing so, we’re left resigning in the knowledge that they’re just never going to be for us.

The GameRevolution editorial team explained which games genre they’ve never got into below. As always, leave your own thoughts in the comments section, and we’ll feature our favorite comment in tomorrow’s Tell GR.

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “I’ve got a weird relationship with survival horror games. I love horror films, so would love nothing more than being able to sit through a Resident Evil or Silent Hill game… but fucking hell. Nope, they just aren’t for me. I realized while playing games in VR that I just cannot differentiate between reality and what I’m playing when I’m fully immersed in a game, and survival horror games just put me on edge. But not in a good way. I’ll keep trying with them, though I’m eventually just going to have to accept that I’m too much of a scaredy-cat.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I never really got into MOBAs. It looks like an RTS without any of the fun parts. I also never really got into the battle royale craze either. Both genres make me wish there were more cooperative online multiplayer games. I challenge myself with my career, so when I want to game for pleasure I tend to stay away from anything too competitive.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “MOBA. I’ve never played League of Legends, Smite, or anything else in that genre. I somehow managed to avoid it entirely, and talk of toxic communities has kept me far away.”

Bradley Russell, news editor: “It’s more a genre of a genre but I just can’t appreciate Metroidvanias as much as I want to. The idea of backtracking and juggling a whole bunch of info about what’s needed to go here and what item upgrade I need to get next is a bit too much for liking. Give me something linear for I am stupid and am lacking in time.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “While it would be easy (and true) to say strategy or MOBA, I just can’t get into RPGs. In addition to the bloated, anime stories in JRPGs, the focus on leveling in both types of RPG seems to take away from the core mechanics and prioritize having a bigger number in order to steamroll enemies. Can’t beat the boss? Just grind and make your attack power higher to win without actually learning or getting better. That might be a bit of an oversimplification but it’s indicative of my biggest problem with the genre.”

Question: Are you going to buy the Google Stadia?

DJJ66: “That’s a no from me, boss.

My internet is solid atm, but I don’t know if that’s going to be a consistent thing throughout given I move around a lot. And I’m oldschool. I like to own the machine that’s doing the rendering. If this thing goes the way of Google Glass everyone’s stuck with a fairly useless paperweight, meanwhile a regular rig will last as long as the components hold. And when they finally fail they can be switched.

Also, big thing we all seem to be overlooking, online only. Screw that.”
