Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “I spent a lot of time with Call of Duty 2, but it’s Black Ops all the way for me. I’ve fallen in and out of love with CoD over the years, but Black Ops was the one entry in the series that pulled me back in consistently. I’ve never latched onto another CoD game like I did with the original Blops, so hopefully, the new Modern Warfare changes that.”
Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “Black Ops 2 takes the win for me. It pushed things into the future and succeeded because of it. I liked the futuristic setting, but appreciated that Treyarch had kept things boots on the ground. The multiplayer maps were damn great, too, with the satisfying three-lane structure making every map a treat. Blops 3 had the potential for top pick, but it became infested with loot box weapons.”
Bradley Russell, news editor: “Black Ops 2. It’s the perfect distillation of the grittiness of Modern Warfare and the off-piste goofiness of Modern Warfare 2, while also having enough of its own identity to stand out from the gloop of generic CoD games that have permeated every Fall since (around) 1864. The guns pack a punch, the movement is rapid without feeling floaty, and there’s no real tried-and-tested cheese method in multiplayer. You can dabble in different playstyles and still come out on top, and have just as much fun sniping as you do running around with a shotty, which can’t be said for the vast majority of Call of Duty games. Plus, it has Standoff, the GOAT Call of Duty map. ‘Nuff said.”
Michael Leri, features editor: “This is tricky because it’s hard to have a Call of Duty where all three pillars are good enough to give it the title of the best in the series. However, Advanced Warfare probably had the strongest overall presentation. It had the most interesting setting that helped all aspects of the game from its well-paced story campaign to its futuristic yet slightly grounded multiplayer that thankfully had a longer time-to-kill. Black Ops 3 may have had a better zombies mode and Infinite Warfare‘s campaign might be just a hair stronger, but no Call of Duty is as consistently incredible as Advanced Warfare.”
