What Are You Playing? | We’re loving Control, an early GOTY contender

This week, Team GR can’t get enough of Control, Remedy Entertainment’s new GOTY contender. Our Features Editor Michael Leri has spent a lot of time with the studio’s latest release and has emerged incredibly impressed by the end result. Elsewhere, I have been playing the brutal survival game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, while UK Lead Editor Mack Ashworth has been mourning the loss of Apex Legends‘ solo mode.

But what have YOU been playing this week? Let us know in the comments section below!

What Are You Playing This Week?

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “I’ve been playing Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, which is perhaps the least intuitive survival game I’ve played (and that’s saying something). The critical consensus has been mixed, but I found it to be deeply engrossing and I suspect many will feel the same. It’s basically designed to be divisive, so we’ll see how it fares. I’ve also been playing Splatterhouse 3, which is an old Sega Genesis game from a series I knew nothing about back in the ’90s. You take control of a Jason Voorhees-esque monster killer who beats the daylights out of a bunch of abominations.

Apex Legends’ solo mode

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “Now that both Apex Legends‘ Solo mode and Modern Warfare‘s Gunfight alpha have come to an end, I’m catching up with single-player experiences. Gears of War 4‘s campaign has my attention right now, as I prepare for Gears 5.”

Control

Michael Leri, features editor: “It’s not even the holiday season and I’ve been drowning in new releases that all couldn’t be more different. I completed Knights and Bikes, a cute indie game that tells a heartwarming tale about dealing with childhood trauma. I also wrapped up a few playthroughs of Man of Medan, which is pretty close to what I wanted from Supermassive although it isn’t quite as good as Until Dawn. But the true star is Control, which was damn near a masterpiece in storytelling and gameplay despite its awful technical performance on consoles. I just got the platinum trophy and I’m itching to play more and learn more about that weird, weird world.”
