Retro Ad Replay – Dead Rising’s 14th Anniversary

It’s time for another Retro Ad Replay article! This is the series where we head backwards in time to reminisce and celebrate the anniversary of some of the most significant moments in gaming. If you find yourself wanting more content like this, be sure to visit Mandatory.com.

In this August 8 edition of Retro Ad Replay, we’re taking a trip back 14 years to when Dead Rising first launched on Xbox 360. That’s August 8, 2006. Developed by Capcom, Dead Rising plopped players down into a huge shopping mall, encouraging them to use anything and everything as weapons to take down the insane number of zombies. While cutting their way through the undead, players were also tasked with time-limited story missions to complete. These, combined with the save system, added an extra layer of pressure. After a successful Xbox 360 launch, the game eventually made its way to PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs.

The GameRevolution Dead Rising review awarded the game a 4/5, speaking highly of the sheer number of zombies, “impressive graphics,” “fun, gory combat,” and “open-ended gameplay.”

Here’s a snippet from the GR review:

Nothing livens up a party like a few zombies. And if a few zombies can make something better, then a lot of zombies should make something awesome, right? That seems to be the theory behind Dead Rising from the undead aficionados at Capcom. As a fellow fan of our non-living brethren, believe me when I say that Dead Rising is indeed the motherload of zombies. It’s bigger than a party; this is a zombie jamboree.

Manage to escape from Raccoon City? Well, whatever you do, don’t head over to Williamette, CO., because they’ve got troubles of their own. No one told freelance photographer Frank West, though, because thanks to a tip, that’s exactly where he’s headed.
