Hocus Pocus 2 Ending Explained: Will There Be a Hocus Pocus 3?

Now that Hocus Pocus 2 has landed on Disney Plus, audiences are wondering if the sequel has paved the way for this film series to become a trilogy. The movie brought Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson back from the dead, almost 30 years after the original classic was released. Here, we delve into the Hocus Pocus 2 ending and discuss the possibility of a sequel. There will, of course, be spoilers…

What happens in the Hocus Pocus 2 ending and post-credits scene?

As Hocus Pocus 2 reaches its inevitable conclusion, after much drama and a couple of musical interludes, the ending is a surprisingly emotional one. Though Winifred Sanderson says that her sisters Mary and Sarah are “leeches” who are simply a means to an end, her grasping for ultimate power leads to their destruction, and her being left all on her own. At this point, she realizes the value of her siblings, begging teenagers Becca, Izzy, and Cassie for their help in bringing them back.

The girls are successful, as they use Winifred’s spell book to cast an incantation of reunion, but rather than bringing both Mary and Sarah back to Salem, it takes Winnie to them, in the afterlife. Though this looks to be the final resting point for all three of the witches, a post-credits scene suggested they could make yet another return to Salem in the future. Gilbert’s shop of mystical and magical objects was shown one last time, and his feline friend Cobweb jumped up to a storage box which was labeled “B.F. Candle #2.” It appears that Gilbert’s curiosity about the Sanderson Sisters led to his creation of not one, but two Black Flame Candles, which can bring them back to the mortal realm.

Disney hasn’t yet announced any official plans for a third entry into the Hocus Pocus film series, but it would appear that leading cast members Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker are leaving the door open for a potential return. Speaking with EW, Midler said: “After 30 years with no sequel to Hocus Pocus, I’ve always been envious of people who get to do their favorite character more than once.” She added: “If there was a third one, of course I’d sign on, but I don’t know how. I can’t imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary, and our relationship.”

Najimy meanwhile said that she’ll “never say never” and, talking to People, Parker said she’d be up for it if Midler was, as “no one says no to the Divine Miss M.” Though this is of course just all chatter for now, the fact that the three main draws of the series are happy to sign on for any future installments is great news. It may have taken 30 years to get back in front of the camera for a sequel, but if there is an appetite for more this time around, it’s unlikely that it’s going to take quite as long to convince Disney to do something about it.
