Hex Phantom Controller Review

Hex Phantom PS5 Controller Review

We’re now four years into the life of the PS5, and yet custom controller companies are still finding ways to innovate on the DualSense. Enter the Hex Phantom Controller from HexGaming with its vast number of enhancements that take aim at PlayStation enthusiasts looking for the best in comfort and competitive edge. After testing the Hex Phantom with both casual and competitive games, it’s time for my review.

Go big or go home

The Hex Phantom goes big when it comes to cramming in features. As with all custom pads, the priority is high-quality back buttons. There are four remappable back buttons on offer here.

As for the triggers, the Phantom boasts trigger-stop mechanisms, meaning users can switch between rapid-fire digital triggers and the default adaptive triggers. While some competitors force buyers to choose one trigger type over another, the Hex Phantom has the best of both worlds.

Interchangeable thumbsticks are the next big highlight. HexGaming has made it easy to swap out the sticks, allowing users to personalize the height and type of curve. Additionally, to help combat the growing concern over “Stick Drift,” HexGaming has implemented a “DRIFTIX module” which gives users the ability to tune their sticks against any drifting issues, helping them remain accurate.

While the Hex Phantom retains much of what makes the DualSense comfortable to use, the added grip is a welcome upgrade over the stock experience.

Minor niggles

When it comes to functionality, the Hex Phantom Controller works almost flawlessly for games like Call of Duty and Fortnite. My only nitpick is the stock membrane switches for the D-Pad and buttons, as some competitors have made the jump to mechanical. With that said, not everyone will like the clickiness of mechanical switches, and the membrane option certainly has the advantage when it comes to remaining stealthy while playing.

Additionally, while I’m a fan of the design and color options that have been announced thus far, I feel like the text on the touchpad is a little over the top. More subtle branding would go a long way towards achieving a cleaner look.

Final Verdict

With an RRP of $239.99 — though starting at $179.99 via the crowdfunding launch page — the Hex Phantom Controller is a notable investment for gamers. It offers extensive customization with features like remappable back buttons, adjustable triggers, and interchangeable thumbsticks. The added grip enhances comfort during extended use, and it performs well in competitive games. However, some design choices, such as the stock membrane switches and touchpad branding, could be improved. Overall, the Phantom Controller is a compelling option for those looking to elevate their PS5 gaming experience.

  • Trigger-stop mechanisms
  • Interchangeable thumbsticks
