Super Mario Odyssey is the fastest-selling mainline 3D Mario game ever in Japan, with it overtaking the likes of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land to break new sales records in the country.
The Nintendo Switch platformer has rocketed past the 1 million sales mark after being on sale for just eight weeks, with the Japanese publication Famitsu reporting that it has shifted 1,055,806 units since launch. This puts it ahead of the previous fastest-selling 3D Mario game, Super Mario 3D Land, which had sold 1,042,511 copies in the same time period, and way ahead of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its 680,395 copies. It is one of only two 3D Mario games to have reached 1 million sales within eight weeks.

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the most well-received Mario games ever, achieving a unanimously positive critical reception and impressive sales worldwide. With Japan being Nintendo’s most prosperous market, it’s indicative of the Switch game’s success that it has managed to break sales records in the region, with the console having also topped 2.9 million units sold within the same time period.
