Nintendo Switch Surpasses Wii U’s Lifetime Sales in Less Than a Year

The Nintendo Switch has now surpassed the Wii U’s lifetime sales in less than a year, further highlighting the impact on Nintendo’s extraordinary comeback.

Nintendo posted its financials for the previous financial quarter, revealing how the Switch had sold 7.23 million units across Q3, bringing its total to around 14.86 million devices. This has now seen it breeze past the Wii U, which sold 13.56 million units before it was discontinued in 2017.

Despite launching in 2012, the Wii U didn’t manage to reach the 15 million mark, with the clunky Gamepad and lack of games leading to it struggling to find an audience. But while many were concerned about Nintendo’s future following the Wii U’s struggles, the company has now posted its most profitable quarter since 2009, with it recording a profit of 116.50 billion yen (roughly $1.1 billion), up from 32.26 billion in the same time period last year.

The Switch’s mammoth success across the Holiday period was bolstered by the recent launch of the critically-acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey, while the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continued to be huge hits worldwide.
