Gamescom 2018 is right around the corner and, as is customary at big gaming conventions, a list of titles on show have already been put forward as potential award winners for this year. One particularly curious addition to the Gamescom nominees is a game codenamed Project Mephisto, and Variety seems to be under the impression that such a title is hinting at a new first-party title from Sony.
The likes of Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey are up for the award of “Best Console Game – Playstation 4” but it is the third nominee in this exclusive list that has gamers and industry leaders baffled ahead of the four-day event, which kicks off on August 21st.
Officially dubbed as a ‘working title’ under Variety’s report on the award nominees, it’s the only title put up for nomination that doesn’t explicitly have a developer attached to it. Furthermore, there has been no mention anywhere of a game featuring this name being playable on the show floor, with every other nominee having been shown off in some capacity over the summer months or being present at Gamescom itself.
Variety goes on to speculate that Project Mephisto could, in fact, be a new installment in Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo series. The company recently teased a number of potentially new games in the long-running franchise, and Mephisto – also known as the Lord of Hatred – was the first Prime Evil that players faced in Diablo II.
Could its working title be a nod to that game series in particular? It’s hard to say at this point, especially when you consider that Sony’s form for projects in the past – such as Project Morpheus becoming Playstation VR – not necessarily having any ties to previous franchises.
Hopefully Gamescom will be able to provide us with some more information on just what exactly this new secret title could be.
