Insomniac Games’ Bryan Intihar Claims Spider-Man Not Possible Without Sony’s Support

Spider-Man may not have been developed if Sony had not thrown their full weight behind the game, according to Insomniac Games’ creative director Bryan Intihar. He revealed that the title wouldn’t have gone past initial discussions if Sony had declined to greenlight it on PS4. Intihar explained that he had many ideas for Spider-Man throughout the game’s design process, and he praised Sony’s backing in allowing his team to adjust the game throughout its development cycle.

“This game would not exist if it wasn’t for PlayStation, if not for their support,” Intihar told the Kinda Funny Games Podcast. “Any time I wanted to do something, and I wanted to make some drastic change, it was just like, ‘Okay’. I never heard about anything. It was just like, ‘Go do it.’ The question was, ‘Is it gonna make the game better?’ and I’d say, ‘Yep’, and they’d go, ‘OK’, and that would be the last time I’d hear about it.”

Intihar also revealed that he was indebted to Sony for allowing Insomniac to develop Spider-Man. He added that all praise should be directed at the entertainment corporation for supporting him and his team, and not just at Insomniac and Marvel Comics.

“So many people want to talk about Marvel and Insomniac, which is awesome,” Intihar said. “But I owe everything to PlayStation.”

Spider-Man is out now on PS4, and is the fastest-selling video game in the UK in 2018 thus far. The game has been praised for its accurate portrayal of Peter Parker and his superhero alter-ego, as well as its web-swinging mechanics. Spider-Man will continue to be updated in the coming months too, with a three-part DLC story, called The City That Never Sleeps, due to arrive in the fall. The first of this trio is named “The Heist,” and will release on October 23.
