FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations | Best Attacking Formations

Best Attacking Formations | 4-2-4

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations

If you’re looking to stuff as many players as you can into the opposition penalty area, we’d argue that the 4-2-4 formation is best. Using this exciting formation, you forego defending responsibilities for all-out attack with four forward players, including two wingers. This is best suited for fast attacking play, with full-backs who are able to get up and down the flanks all game long. Make sure all of your forwards have plenty of pace and are strong in the air to convert crosses. No hold-up play here.

As is it so attacking, however, you will need to ensure that your midfield pair is more than capable. These two players will need to be playmakers and defensive midfielders all-in-one. We’d recommend choosing players such as Ndombele, Modric, and Kante here.

4-2-4 Tactics

You’ll want plenty of players making a high number of attacking runs here. Crosses will be key. We’d recommend that you ensure your midfielders are low attacking/high defensive, however. Opt for Constant Pressure and Fast Build-Up (rather wide, plenty of players in the box, and up for set-pieces). Remember to allow your midfielders to make aggressive interceptions, too.

Best Attacking Formations | 4-3-2-1

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations

If you’re looking to emulate the likes of Liverpool’s ferocious attacking play and gengenpress, you can thanks to the 4-3-2-1 formation. Using this formation, you can make the most out of those “CF” players you see more regularly in FIFA 20 than in previous games. This is what to use to get the most out of players such as Salah, Son Heung-Min, and others.

You will be conceding goals with this formation, but you will also get plenty of opportunities to score. Stuff your team with pacey, attacking players with a lot of stamina. Make sure you have quick full-backs, however, as they will prove vital here.

4-3-2-1 Tactics

Definitely tick the “Pressure on Heavy Touch” option for your tactics here. This should help you to win the ball back quickly. Make sure your full-backs defend and attack, as they will be your main crossing options.

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations | Best Defending Formations

Best Defending Formations | 5-4-1

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations

If you’re looking to make it difficult for the opposition to break you down, you’ll want five defenders at the back. The 5-4-1 formation allows you to essentially have ten players behind the ball, but with wingers available for any breaks. You’ll find that your striker can become isolated, which is why we suggest a goal-poacher with pace. Someone like Griezmann, Vardy, or Suarez would work here.

5-4-1 Tactics

You will want to make your wing-backs as highly defensive and attacking as possible here. Make sure your center midfielders and all defenders have aggressive interceptions turned on, too. Ensure that your wingers make attacking runs all the time, too, as this will be perfect for counter-attacks. Get a good deal of defending and attacking width here, as you have two players down both wings.

Best Defending Formations | 4-3-3 (3)

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations

If you want the best counter-attacking team possible that knows how to defend, opt for the defensive 4-3-3. This option gives you two holding defensive midfielders as well as a fluid attacking three. Midfielders such as Kroos, Kante, and Fabinho should thrive in this formation. You won’t have too much creativity in the team, mind. This means that you will need to ensure that your wingers have bags of pace and skill. Players like Sane, Coman, and Dembele would be great options.

4-3-3 (3) Tactics

To get the most out of this formation, you need to ensure that your full backs defend. We’d highly recommend you make it so your two CDMs both have aggressive interceptions turned on and that they don’t get forward. You’ll want your forwards to stay high, able to pounce on the break.

Best Ultimate Team Players For a Defending Formation

Although you will want plenty of players with high defense and strength stats, you will also need to use pacey, goal-poaching forwards and quick, defensive full-backs, perfect for the counter-attacking style. We’d recommend the following players:

  • Alba
  • Busquets
  • Carvajal
  • Casemiro
  • Cavani
  • Chiellini
  • Coman
  • Dembele
  • Fabinho
  • Fernandinho
  • Gnabry
  • Godin
  • Gomez
  • Griezmann
  • Hummels
  • Icardi
  • Immobile
  • Kante
  • Kroos
  • Modric
  • Oblak
  • Ramos
  • Sane
  • Suarez
  • Umtiti
  • Varane
  • Vardy
  • Witsel

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations | Best Possession Formations

Best Possession Formations | 3-1-4-2

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations

If you’re after controlling possession, you want as many midfielders with good passing and overall ability as you can. 3-1-4-2 gives you a fine balance in your team, with width coming from low wingers/high wing-backs. A good holding defensive midfielder is a must, however, with solid passing abilities.

3-1-4-2 Tactics

Ensure that your game is controlled in midfield by altering the tactics of your CDM. Change his settings to low attacking/high defensive.  You’ll want him to cover the center of the pitch, too, so that he doesn’t stray from his position, allowing you to get caught out. You’ll want your wingers to defend, too. Allow your forwards to drift in and out of position, also, as this will let them cover every blade of grass.

Best Possession Formations | 4-2-3-1 (2)

FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Best Formations

If you want to make the most out of quality passing to control possession, you will need an attacking midfielder. We’d suggest sticking to the tried-and-true 4-2-3-1 (2) formation that so many teams employ. It’s perfectly balanced throughout the team, but it can feel a little light with just one striker up-front. It’s great for controlling the opposition through possession.

4-2-3-1 (2) Tactics

Opt for the wide version of this formation to give your team more width and attacking play down the wings. You’ll want wingers with some pace and great passing stats here. The likes of Messi, Di Maria, and Hazard should do nicely. We’d argue that you should make one of your two CDMs more adventurous to help out your attacks. Follow these steps to make this happen:

  • Defensive Behaviour > Balanced | Attacking Support > Get Forward | Interceptions > Aggressive

Best Ultimate Team Players For a Possession Formation

You’ll be wanting to look at players with great passing and well-balanced stats elsewhere for a possession-based team. You’ll want forwards who can do a bit of everything, too. We’d recommend the following list of players for possession teams:

  • Alaba
  • Alderweireld
  • Alisson
  • Coutinho
  • David Silva
  • De Bruyne
  • De Jong
  • Di Maria
  • Eriksen
  • Firmino
  • Hazard
  • Isco
  • Kane
  • Kimmich
  • Kroos
  • Laporte
  • Lewandowski
  • Marcelo
  • Marquinhos
  • Messi
  • Modric
  • Pique
  • Pjanic
  • Rakitic
  • Rodriguez
  • Thiago
  • Verratti
