Today, a reliable Nintendo leaker dropped the news on Twitter that Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is delayed. While Nintendo hasn’t set a date, or even announced an official title for BOTW2, previous rumors pointed to a Holiday 2020 release for the game. Unfortunately, the rumor states development has fallen behind schedule, and we won’t see Breath of the Wild 2 in 2020.

The sequel to Zelda: BOTW was announced during E3 2019, and it immediately became one of the most anticipated games in development. Since then, we’ve got no news about the title. The game began development as DLC for Breath of the Wild, but producer Eiji Aonuma stated that the ideas quickly piled up to the point the decision was made to make a full sequel.

Aonuma also revealed that Breath of the Wild 2 takes inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2. What that means for the upcoming title isn’t known, but it’s possible we may see more interactions with NPCs, for example. Zelda was featured prominently in the reveal trailer, which means we’ll likely see much more of her. In fact, many speculate that Zelda may be the main character this time around, with Link taking a backseat as a companion character.
Nintendo is known for being incredibly cryptic about its games while they’re in development. As a release date hasn’t ever been set for Breath of the Wild 2, we likely won’t hear any official confirmation of this delay. Breath of the Wild took the series to new heights. Since that’s paid off so well, shipping over 16 million copies as of December 2019, this new entry will likely take the formula even further. As such, it makes sense that the game would be delayed. Nintendo’s flagship series always seem to take forever between entries, but it’s almost always worth the wait.
