Unfortunately, the GoldenEye 007 Xbox Game Pass version will not have online multiplayer. This is regrettable considering that Nintendo confirmed the Switch version of the game would support this functionality.
GoldenEye 007 Xbox Game Pass vs. Nintendo Switch Online versions
As revealed on the official 007 website, online play in GoldenEye 007 will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch Online version. It was announced during the Nintendo Direct stream earlier today as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass, which includes Pokemon Stadium and multiple Mario Party games. That said, it looks like that the online multiplayer support here may run using the console’s N64 emulator. If so, it may not run smoothly given that the emulator is known for its delay-based netcode that can cause slowdown and input lag.
On the other hand, the Xbox Game Pass version will still feature the game’s classic split-screen, four-player local multiplayer mode. So at least there’s a way to relive the glory days of the classic game (if you can get your friends in the same living room nowadays). Xbox has also confirmed that it will include the classic campaign mode along with cheat modes. In addition, this updated version will have dual-analog stick support for improved control options, run in native 16:9 resolution at up to 4K Ultra HD, and have a consistent refresh rate. However, based on the polygonal figure of James Bond in the teaser trailer (posted above), it doesn’t look like they went through the trouble of updating the assets, so this is more of a port than a remaster.
On the brighter side, players who own a digital copy of Rare Replay will be able to download the game for free on Xbox One or Xbox Series S|X without needing an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
In other news, Nintendo has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the name of the Breath of the Wild sequel, and the Fire Emblem Engage release date and Divine Edition have been announced as well.
