The Threads NSFW policy for nudity and sexual content is important to understand before you start posting any images that may get you banned on the platform. While Threads by Instagram is a competitor to Twitter, the policies on nude images are quite different between the two. The community guidelines for Threads is based on its parent platform, Instagram, so if you’re used to how Instagram works, you’ll understand what you should and shouldn’t post on Threads. But if you’re coming from Twitter, the policy on nudity and nude images may surprise you.
Is Nudity allowed on Threads?
No, nudity is explicitly not allowed on Threads.
This comes straight from the Instagram Community Guidelines, which Threads follows, where it says “we don’t allow nudity on Instagram.” So anything showing genitals, sexual intercourse, or even a close-up of bare buttocks are banned.
As for exceptions, the platform will allow nude images that are artistic or creative. Threads will also permit photos of female nipples so long as it has to do with breastfeeding, health-related situations, birth-giving. Nudity in paintings and sculptures is also fine.
The guidelines are meant to create a positive, safe, and inclusive community that cause the least offense to the majority of users. This is the reason why Threads and Instagram are far more restrictive on nudity and sexual content than Twitter and other social platforms are.
That said, much like Instagram, enforcement of the Threads NSFW policy can be strict or inconsistent. Any content that is in the gray area, like accounts that review strip clubs or posts that have the word “boob” in it have been censored or suspended on Instagram. So we wouldn’t be surprised if similar posts on Threads will be treated the same way. Since repeated violations of the guideline can get your account suspended or removed, we recommend staying on the safe side when it comes to potential or explicit NSFW content on Threads.
