Despite being almost six years old, the Nintendo Switch is still selling well, to the point that it’s now ahead of its predecessor, the Wii. That’s according to a recent report and means the hybrid system could soon become the best-selling console in the US.
The PS2 is still on top
According to Gamesindustry.biz, the Switch has now surpassed the Wii in the US market as of July 2023. Much of this is being attributed to the recent release of Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which has so far sold over 18 million copies.
According to Nintendo itself, the Switch has sold 129.53 million units globally. The report from Gamesindustry.biz states that the video game industry has seen growth in the US, which is likely down to improved hardware supplies.
However, the Switch still has some way to go before it can topple the PlayStation 2, which is the best-selling console of all time, with more than 150 million units sold. According to Wikipedia, the Nintendo system is trailing behind the iconic Sony console and the Nintendo DS.
The Switch is also behind the Xbox 360, but only by one million units. If this trend continues, Nintendo’s hybrid system could become the top console in the US.
Having said that, it feels like the Switch is coming to the end of its life. There have already been rumors that a proposed Switch 2 could be out in 2024, so it’s hard to say whether the current-gen Nintendo machine will live long enough to surpass the PS2.
