The Sea of Stars Malkomud boss fight is challenging since it can catch players off guard. It triggers just after walking into a seemingly normal room, after all. It may take a few tries, but here’s how to beat Malkomud and Rockie in Sea of Stars.
How to beat Malkomud and Rockie in Sea of Stars
To beat Malkomud and Rockie in Sea of Stars, it’s important to heal beforehand. There’s not a campfire right outside his unsuspecting lair, so you’ll have to either use some healing items, go all the way back to the campfire in the merchant’s shop near the save point (as shown in the above picture). It’s right near the first pushable crystal outside the Malkomud’s fort.
Malkomud, the smaller rodent, has an array of his own attacks to watch out for. His special Shovel Might move can be blocked, but the rhythm can be hard to nail down since he waits a beat to do the third and final hit. His normal attack has him tossing a spiky gem at one character, so just be sure to pay attention to who he’s targeting in order to nail the timing on the block. As is the case with most attacks, the character being targeted will jump out of position.
Rockie’s Salamanger special move has him gobbling up one character to spit them at another. After two chews, he’ll spit them out, so be sure to block quickly after that. Both characters, however, will still take a hefty chunk of damage regardless. His normal attack is a standard slam that can be blocked. Just be sure to learn the timing, as he winds up for about a second before stomping down.
After taking a certain amount of damage, Malkomud will jump on Rockie and they’ll attack as Malkomount for the rest of the fight. Their special Geogbress attack has Rockie spitting gems at one character. The timing is incredibly vague, but it does hit multiple times in the middle and end of the barrage. It’s normal attack has Malkomud hitting your whole party with his shovel. It doesn’t do a ton of damage, but be sure to block right as Rockie turns to its side.
Learning to defend against each attack is crucial, but only part of the strategy. Since this fight is the hardest one so far, it requires that you take more advantage of its core mechanics. Unlike the Elder Mist fight that makes its special attacks easy to interrupt, Malkomud’s aren’t as lenient. You’ll need to match the icons for them as quickly as possible. Just remember that Valere’s and Garl’s melee attacks do hammer damage, while Zale’s melee attack does sword damage. Valere’s magical attacks do moon damage and Zale’s do sun damage.
Because of how quickly they use their special attacks in this fight, you have to strategically leave out orbs that pour out of enemies struck by melee attacks and not immediately suck them up. These will imbue Zale’s melee attacks with sun damage Valere’s melee attacks with moon damage.
Suck them up using the “Boost” button prompt before you attack. These orbs act as a solid insurance plan and are essential in interrupting special attacks. For example, if Malkomud has one moon and two hammers above his head, suck up two orbs as Valere and do a melee attack to break it in one fell and efficient swoop.
Don’t forget to use combo attacks, too, which are dictated by the pips right above your party’s health bars. If they have two hammers and two swords above their head, you can quickly knock all four out with a Solstice Strike, which requires one pip of combo meter. Mending Light, which takes two combo pips, heals your entire party, and it is invaluable.
