Sea of Stars Romance: Are There Romanceable Characters?

Some Sea of Stars romance options would allow players to bond with characters and potentially have a deeper connection to the game. But just because it is an RPG does not mean it has romanceable characters in it. Here’s where or not Sea of Stars has romance options in it.

Is there romance in Sea of Stars?

Sea of Stars does not have any romance options in it. Players do not get a say in the broad strokes of the story or the smaller details like romance options. Sabotage Studio’s RPG is a linear tale and not one with many romance options like Mass Effect or Dragon Age. Sea of Stars’ story is mainly about the power of friendship with not many nods to sexuality or anything of the sort.

Many likely think that there are Sea of Stars romance options since it is so heavily inspired by 1990s RPGs like Chrono Cross and the earlier Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy in particular has had romance in past games, as evidenced by couples like Locke and Celes in Final Fantasy 6 and Cecil and Rosa in Final Fantasy 4.

Creative director Thierry Boulanger spoke about this in an early interview before the game came out. He noted that it will have some RPG staples like side quests, but not ones that end with a kiss.

“While all characters have a rich backstory and some of them may hint at optional side quests for their personal closure towards the end of the game, there is nothing in the game akin to romance, gifting, reputation or relationship building,” said Boulanger.

Even though DLC and updates are coming to Sea of Stars sometime in the future, it is probably not likely that these changes and content drops will contain new romanceable characters.
