This September is packed with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games to look forward to. The next entry in the critically acclaimed Gears of War series, Gears 5, is set to release just a few days before the long-awaited launch of Borderlands 3. Monster Hunter World‘s first major expansion will make its debut alongside Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls-inspired RPG Code Vein. Sony and Microsoft should partake in all the excitement by featuring quality games on their respective PS Plus and Games With Gold lineups. The following are our September 2019 PS Plus and Games with Gold predictions.
September 2019 PS Plus and Xbox Games With Gold predictions | The big ones
Now would be a great time to feature Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite on either PS Plus or Game With Gold, as doing so would help give its community a jolt of energy on the eve of its second anniversary. Plenty of DLC characters and costumes have released for the game since its launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 19, 2017, so the move makes sense for all parties involved. Of course, with Iceborne on the horizon, Capcom could opt to offer Monster Hunter World on either service, too.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is another great candidate, as it released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 30, 2014. Still praised today for its innovative Nemesis system, the game has DLC available in the form of expansions, skins, runes, and challenge modes. Having Shadow of Mordor on either lineup could pave the way for the introduction of another sequel, as a follow-up to 2017’s Shadow of War has yet to be announced.
Mad Max could arrive on Games With Gold next month too, as it released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 1, 2015 and was featured in Sony’s April 2018 lineup. As the titular hero, fans are tasked with building their own wasteland vehicle in order to reach the fabled Plains of Silence. Mad Max may not be the most memorable game this generation of consoles has to offer, but it is a worthwhile single-player experience for Xbox users to sink their teeth into in between Gears 5 multiplayer sessions.
Of course, PlayStation 4 exclusives like Gravity Rush Remastered, Gravity Rush 2, and Killzone: Shadow Fall could always appear on PS Plus. However, out of all the first-party games that Sony hasn’t featured in its service yet, Knack 2 is most likely to show up, as it released for PlayStation 4 on September 5, 2017. The colorful platformer could serve as a nice distraction for kids to play while parents relish in the month’s gruesome first-person shooters.
September would be a great month for Microsoft to include Gears of War: Ultimate Edition or Gears of War 4 on Games With Gold too, seeing as how Gears 5 is coming out soon. Should the company not want to confuse players with its offerings, it could include another exclusive, ReCore, in its lineup, as it released for Xbox One on September 13, 2016. Similarly to Knack 2, the game is kid-friendly and can easily be enjoyed by adults whenever they grow tired of mutilating foes to death.
September 2019 PS Plus and Xbox Games With Gold predictions | The indies
StudioMDHR’s Cuphead would be an excellent indie title to include in Xbox’s Games With Gold lineup, as it’s massively popular and will be celebrating its second anniversary on September 29, 2017. For those that don’t know about this stylish run and gun game, it stars the titular hero and his brother Mugman and tasks each with defeating a series of increasingly challenging bosses in order to face the devil. Should Microsoft have plans on acquiring Cuphead‘s developer anytime soon, featuring the title on Games With Gold makes sense. Its DLC won’t be out until next year, but this could get more people on board for its downloadable expansion whenever it comes out.
SteamWorld Dig 2 is a great candidate for PS Plus, as it released for PlayStation 4 on September 26, 2017. Similarly to the original game, this sequel challenges platformer fans to explore every nook and cranny of an underground mine in order to discover the whereabouts of Rusty, the series’ previous protagonist. Players gain access to new weapons like pressure bombs and robotic arms as they dig deeper into the abyss. Like Cuphead, SteamWorld Dig 2 is a game that people of all ages can enjoy. That’s not to say that it doesn’t have plenty of difficult moments. It turns out that digging through the various layers of the earth is pretty hard.
Hollow Knight may also show up on PS Plus or Games With Gold, as the title released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 25, 2018 and a sequel, Silksong, is slated to release soon. This challenging, moody Metroidvania may be a welcome offering for people who aren’t interested in September’s adult-oriented releases.
Sony stated in June that its next console will focus primarily on hardcore video game fans. Though it remains to be seen how exactly the company and its closet rival will adapt its next line of hardware, software, and services to cater to this audience, one can hope that PS Plus and Games With Gold will improve through new features and better games in the future.
