The Medium Xbox Series X Silent Hill church

The Medium is a wicked new take on Silent Hill for Xbox Series X

One of the recent reveals for new Xbox Series X games was The Medium. Bloober Team’s newest creation is giving off some serious Silent Hill vibes, especially because they’re working with the Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.

A central premise of Silent Hill is that there are two worlds. The “normal” world is a little bit spooky, but the Otherworld is where things really begin to get creepy. A “light world” and “dark world” aren’t new themes to gaming, mind; The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and many other titles have made use of the concept.

The Medium does much of the same, although this new game’s Otherworld looks much more intense, similar to the fiery hellscapes of the Constantine film featuring Keanu Reeves. It looks like this will make for a much more intense horror experience, although that won’t necessarily diminish the scares.

The Medium and its musical madness

This concept of two worlds extends to the music, too. If you haven’t already picked up on the Silent Hill vibes, you certainly will when you hear the soundtrack; the legendary Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka has signed up to make some of the music for this game.

Interestingly, this tantalizing new title will have a “dual soundtrack.” While it’s not explicitly mentioned as such, this presumably means that one soundtrack will be used for each of the two worlds. Combine that with the striking visual distinctions and you have a recipe for something really interesting.

Can Bloober Team deliver the scares?

One concern might be whether or not Bloober Team can deliver a scary game. They certainly have plenty of experience in the medium. In fact, their last three games were horror titles; just look at their most recent releases:

The Medium won’t exactly be a new Silent Hill game, but it’s looking like it will come awfully close. I’m excited to see what they’ve managed to put together for this frightening new experience.
