How to Unlock Subclasses in Destiny 2

Destiny 2 includes a set of classes that you’ll be able to unlock for your Titan, Hunter, or Warlock. If you’ve been reading up on everything there is to know about the game ahead of its release you’re no doubt familiar with some of the choices available to you like the Sentinel or Arcstrider. But there are additional subclasses you’l be able to unlock as you play through the game. You’ll have to go out of your way to unlock them, however, and you can’t just expect them become available as you make your way through the main story mode. If you’re interested in using these new subclasses, here’s what you’ll have to do to make them available to you.

Which subclasses can be unlocked in Destiny 2?

Aside from the primary classes that can be unlocked in-game, you can unlock the following subclasses in Destiny 2:

Titan Striker – Arc-based class you’ll want to use if you’re concerned with larger areas of damage.

Titan Sunbreaker – Solar-based class that can burn up your competition.

Hunter Nightstalker – Void-based class where you can force enemies to stay in one place and keep them from attacking.

Hunter Gunslinger – Solar-based class that deals heavy damage to a single target.

Warlock Voidwalker – Void-based class with massive Void damage.

Warlock Stormcaller – Arc-based class with electrical-based damage that comes from your Warlock’s hands.

How do you unlock additional subclasses in Destiny 2?

If you want to unlock the additional subclasses like Titan Striker or Warlock Voidwalker, you’ll have to go on a hunt throughout the various planets and seek out Relics. Class Relics are found within loot chests that you can see strewn in various places. When you find a Relic, you’ll open up a specific quest line that will lead you to find a certain item. The relics themselves will drop at random from chests, which can be frustrating, but the chests themselves luckily have some higher drop rates.

Once you find a Relic, you’ll be sent on a quest to compete in certain events, compete in Public Events, or some other kind of prerequisite that will send you on a journey to fulfill its requirements. If you’re ever unsure of what you need to do next for a certain Class Relic, then you can check the relic on your Character menu screen to see what’s coming up and what percentage of the way you are to your goal.

Obviously you’ll have to reach 100 percent on the quest you’re currently on, but then you’ll unlock a new mission to complete after that. Once it’s complete, you’ll travel to the Shard of the Traveler of the Earth and compete against wave after wave of enemies in order to unlock your new subclass. This may take several attempts, so make sure you don’t just give up in the middle of the trial. You’ll be using your new Super Ability throughout the combat rounds, so you’ll at the very least be getting in plenty of practice.

As far as when your subclass relic will drop, there’s no clear-cut answer at present. Some player report that their very first drop didn’t happen until several levels in, while others were able to get theirs much earlier. As far as the second and third relics, there are reports of the relics dropping past level 13 and on, so much of the difficulty here is waiting around to see when you’ll actually get the relic you need to move forward and complete certain levels.

It can take a while to grab the items you need to make progress, but keep at it and eventually you’ll have everything in place, able to push forward with your new subclasses in no time. No matter what, if you keep playing and waiting for new chests to drop, you’ll eventually get what you’re looking for. In the meantime, the older subclasses aren’t so bad playing with anyway.
