When Does Red Dead Redemption Take Place? RDR 2 Time Period

The new Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer has dropped, revealing a little more info about the new Red Dead Redemption time period and revealing what year the Red Dead Redemption prequel takes place in. With it being one of the hottest releases of the year, players are eager to learn more about the game, with the trailer revealing some more info regarding the RDR 2 story and setting.

When Does Red Dead Redemption Take Place?

The original Red Dead Redemption (though not the first RDR game, as that would be the oft-overlooked Red Dead Revolver) takes place in 1911, right around the decline of the American Frontier which ended in 1912. Towards the end of the original game, the introduction of new technology such as motor vehicles signaled the end of John Marston’s horse ‘n’ outlaws world, which means that there wouldn’t leave much room for cowboys in a sequel to Rockstar’s 2010 game.

As a result, Rockstar decided to go back in time and bring us a prequel, with Red Dead Redemption 2 set before the events of its predecessor and featuring a fresh-faced (well, kinda) John Marston in the process. But when does Red Dead Redemption 2 take place

What is the Red Dead Redemption 2 Time Period?

The Red Dead Redemption time period for the prequel is 1899, as confirmed by today’s brand new trailer, which you can watch right here. While the American Frontier is still on the decline during this time period, it’s got a little more life in it, even if the Old West is struggling to cope with the changes taking place around it.

“By 1899 the West had nearly been tamed,” the trailer explains. “The age of gunslingers and outlaws had almost passed into myth.”

Aside from the aforementioned appearance of John Marston, the game is light on specifics, though if we had to guess there will be more guns, more horses, and more lassoing. We can’t wait.
