Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the latest game in Ubisoft’s epic series, is out just this week, and while it has some flaws, it’s still a lot of fun. One of the most entertaining, and certainly most important, features in the game is the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ship, and naval combat. The Adrestia is a tough little ship, but it can get a whole lot tougher, as you can upgrade it in a number of ways. But where do you go to upgrade your ship? What do you need to upgrade it?
How Do You Upgrade Your Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Ship?
You get access to your ship pretty early in the game, depending on how long you spend on the starting island of Kephallonia. After you unlock the Adrestia, you can immediately start to upgrade it, so all its different features such as weapons, armor etc can be more effective. However, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey doesn’t really tell you how to do this. Fortunately it’s quite simple.
Go to the pause menu, and you’ll notice at the top a tab for “Ship.” Head there, and you’ll see all the details for your ship, such as stats, armor, damage etc. You can also see all the features of the Adrestia, and all of these can be upgraded. Simply hover the pointer over the feature you want to upgrade, such as “Arrow Volleys,” hold the interact button (X on PS4, A on Xbox One) and you’ll upgrade that feature to the next level! If you’ve got the resources, of course.
What Resources Do You Need to Upgrade the Ship?
While it’s good to upgrade your ship, obviously you can’t max out every one of its features immediately. Upgrades cost money for starters, so you’ll need to have plenty of Drachmae. Ships don’t earn XP, although later upgrades require your character to be a certain level before you can get them. Instead of XP, you have to spend certain resources. There are four main resources that ship upgrades require: Olive Wood, Soft Leather, Iron Metal, and Ancient Tablets. Upgrades require up to three of these. Javelin Throws, for example, only need Iron Metal and Olive Wood, but Javelins themselves (a separate upgrade) also require Ancient Tablets.
Bear in mind that some of these resources are required for other things too, such as upgrading weapons or armor. Some can be bought at merchants, found in chests, or earned in quests, but mostly you’ll have to scavenge around. Olive Wood can be found growing in forest areas, Iron Metal can be dug up in caves or on the ground, and Soft Leather can be got be killing animals. Ancient Tablets are pretty rare though, they can only be found in chests or lying about in ruins.
What Are the Best Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Ship Upgrades?
There are nine ship upgrades to get in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to improve your chances in combat. These fall under three categories: Arsenal, Weapons Damage, and Ship & Crew Endurance. Each has a different affect on combat, with varying degrees of usefulness. You should certainly seek to upgrade them all a little bit beyond the basic, but some are more useful than others. Here’s all the upgrades we advise you to get first:
- Hull: The general health and armor level of your ship, so of course this one is useful. However, Hull upgrading also has another major perk, in that it allows you to recruit and utilize extra Lieutenants. You can see these on the right of the Ship menu with a ‘locked’ symbol by them, but they get unlocked as your upgrade Hull. Lieutenants give you major naval bonuses, so it’s like two upgrades for the price of one!
- Arrows & Arrow Volleys: Your main long-range weapons in naval combat are Arrows, and there are two possible upgrades for them. You should seek to get as many points into both of these as you can. The straight ‘Arrows’ is the more useful of the two however, and you should focus on that first, since that increases base damage and creates weak points to exploit.
- Crew Armor: Do not underestimate the power of the “Brace” move. If you’re about to get hit by another ship, hit Brace (L1 on PS4, LB on Xbox) in time and you’ll drastically reduce your damage. Upgrade Crew Armor and you’ll make it more effective.
