Players all over the world have been eagerly awaiting the appearance of the Red Dead Redemption 2 Mexico locations from Red Dead Redemption, although it seems that the fan-favorite areas are nowhere to be found. Rockstar Games‘ latest Western launched to unanimous critical praise, yet it seems the promises of Red Dead Redemption 2 including all of its predecessor’s map weren’t quite true. Here’s how to get to Mexico in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Mexico – How to Get to Mexico
Plot twist: you can’t. Well, not yet, anyway. Mexico seems to have been featured on the map that was leaked prior to the game’s release, yet the area has since been grayed out. In fact, the leaked map ended up being very different from the in-game map that players have access to now. Although several locations from the original game appear in Red Dead Redemption 2, the Mexican areas don’t seem to be among them.
That’s not to say you can’t get to Mexico, though. Perhaps there is a way that hasn’t been discovered yet; unlikely, but perhaps. What’s more likely, though, is that there is currently no way of getting to Mexico, but it may be added to the game as part of a future update. Until then, it’s probably best to get your Red Dead Redemption fix of nostalgia by visiting the other returning areas, which include pretty much all of the other areas from the first game.

So, no Mexico may be a bit of a bummer, but it isn’t all bad. Once you finish the main story and play through the game’s lengthy epilogue sequence, you’ll be sent on a mission to Blackwater. It’s at this point that the game allows you to truly experience the sheer scale of Red Dead Redemption 2, as you can ride out west past the city, experiencing the scale of the first game’s world in a new and beautiful light.
Here, you’ll see all of the Red Dead Redemption map except for the Mexico parts. It’s all remastered and is seamlessly woven into the game world of Red Dead Redemption 2. There’s a lot more to the map once you’re given free rein to explore past Blackwater in the post-game—a journey that recalls that iconic Red Dead Online trophy from Red Dead Redemption that had you ride from Blackwater to the furthest point in Mexico. You may not make it to Mexico, but you’ll be knocked down by a wave of nostalgia all the same.
The official Red Dead Redemption 2 map consists of five districts: Ambarino, New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth, and New Austin. Returning areas include Armadillo, Tumbleweed and Fort Mercer, but alas, there is no sign of Mexico at the moment.
Red Dead Redemption 2 – Mexico DLC
It’s highly unlikely that players can access Mexico and just haven’t found out how yet. Although there is a chance that Mexico won’t make an appearance in the game, there is also a chance that it could be added at a later date.
The post-game map expansion implies that Red Dead Online is going to take place across a boundless area filled with deserts, swamps, and grassy plains. As big as it already is, perhaps Rockstar intends to launch Mexico as DLC, either packed with new quests that build on the stories from the Mexico sections in Red Dead Redemption, or built to house vicious PvP battles in the game’s upcoming online segment.
This is just speculation, though; there is, of course, the chance that Mexico was simply left out and won’t feature in Red Dead Redemption 2. However, it would be a shame for something as iconic as the Mexico section to have gotten the chop. Everyone remembers riding into Mexico to the backing track provided by José Gonzalez. Mexico forms a core part of the Red Dead Redemption spirit.
So, there’s no Mexico for now, unfortunately. However, perhaps it will be added in a future update. Red Dead Redemption was maintained incredibly well by Rockstar for years, so the launch of Red Dead Online for Red Dead Redemption 2 could bring an expansion that includes Mexico with it. What better way to head south of the border than to ride alongside your friends, undertaking the same journey that John Marston would go on years later in Red Dead Redemption. Here’s hoping!
