We’re all hoping and praying to the Rockstar gods that Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform play becomes a reality. But, will RDR Online have cross-play on PS4 and Xbox One or is this merely a pipe dream cooked up by people who have spent too much time in the outback?
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 Cross-Platform? – Will RDR Online Have Cross-Play?
Update 11/4/2019: Well, it’s been a year since the game released on Xbox One and PS4 and it’s about to release on PC and we’ve heard no word on cross-play. It seems as though Red Dead Online will not be cross-platform, and it’s likely this will remain the case.
Hold your horses, folks. Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform play has not been confirmed, nor is it looking arriving imminently. Of course, while only the single-player component of the title is currently out, RDR Online has also received no such confirmation in regards to cross-play. Anything you’ve read is just hearsay, rumor, and innuendo.
The only recent official communication regarding cross-play has come from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, who spoke recently at a Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference (H/T GameSpot), which is about as far away from the Wild West as you can get. “Eventually I think we will be in a cross-platform world, for a lot of titles,” Zelnick says, adding that Microsoft is “basically already there [for cross-play]” and that “the closed system walls are coming down.”
Zelnick is one of only a handful of prominent industry figures to vocally support cross-platform play and, despite this, there’s still nothing in the pipeline for Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform plans. However, with Take-Two being, at the end of the day, the taskmasters behind Rockstar’s properties, it’s an extreme likelihood that RDR Online cross-play will come to both PS4 and Xbox One by 2019 or 2020.
After all, no one saw Fortnite cross-play coming, and that arrived seemingly out of nowhere in September 2018.
Imagine the scene: players of both main consoles being able to ride off into the sunset, or trading tales about a hunting trip just outside of Saint Denis while playing poker. It’s the final frontier for this generation of gaming and, while it isn’t happening just yet, RDR Online cross-play could very well be coming to a console near you very soon.
