Red Dead Redemption 2 Ultimate Edition owners get a horse upgrade in Red Dead Online. However, it’s not immediately apparent how to get the Black Chestnut Thoroughbred upgrade. There are a few steps you have to complete before you can upgrade your horse in Red Dead Online, and it’s easy to overlook them. How to Get the Black Chestnut Thoroughbred Horse Upgrade in Red Dead Online
Before you can get your hands on a new horse in Red Dead Online, you’ll need to play through the tutorial until you reach the mission Honor Among Horse Thieves. Complete that mission, and you’ll wind up at the Saint Denis horse stables. Once there you’ll be given your first horse, the Tennesee Walker. The game will also step you through the process of fitting your horse with tack. After that, you’ll automatically leave the stables.
If you own Red Dead Redemption 2 Ultimate Edition, it’s at this point you can go ahead and get your Black Chestnut Thoroughbred. It’s a much better horse than the Tennesee Walker, and you’ll want to go ahead and upgrade unless you’re just in love with your first horse. Note, you’ll have to get rid of the Tennesee Walker if you choose to upgrade horses this early in the game as you only have access to one horse stall. To buy another, you’ll need to spend $100 to unlock it.
To start the upgrade process, manage your horses and then hold Square or X to sell your original horse. Then you can go to “Buy Horses” in the menu. You’ll find the Black Chestnut Thoroughbred under the racing category. As long as you’ve sold your first horse, you can purchase the Thoroughbred for free now.
Unfortunately, you’re not ready to ride yet. You’ll now need to fit your new horse with a saddle by going to the horse management menu and selecting your horse. You can then put a saddle on it. Once you’ve done that, return to the main stable menu and press Y or Triangle to equip it as your main horse.
Once you’ve accomplished the above, you can leave the stable and whistle to call your Black Chestnut Thoroughbred.
