Red Dead Online Posse – How to Start a Posse

While many players are still busy playing through Red Dead Redemption 2 offline, Rockstar has rolled out the beta for Red Dead Online. While you can play this solo, part of the fun in playing online is tackling the game with other players. In that case, you’ll probably want to form a Red Dead Online posse. Do so, and you’ll be playing Red Dead Redemption 2 co-op. We’re here to show you how to start a posse in Red Dead Online.

How to Start a Red Dead Online Posse

The first thing you’ll need to do is the initial online mission “Honor Among Horse Thieves,” then return to your camp. This unlocks the posse option. After that, the rest is really quite simple. Pressing left on the D-pad will bring up the Posse menu, and there you’ll see a list of available groups to join. To start your own, select “Form a Posse” by pressing Square (PS4) or X (Xbox One). From here you can invite specific members, choose a campsite, adjust privacy options, and turn friendly fire on or off. The options are very basic at the moment, but they’ll likely expand when Red Dead Online leaves beta.

The alternative, of course, is to simply choose “Posse Up” from the main Red Dead Online menu before you start the game. That way you can find co-op players and form a posse before you start, and head into the game with that group.

What is a Red Dead Online Temporary or Persistent Posse?

The other option you’ll notice is choosing between a “temporary” and “persistent” posse. A Temporary Posse is just what it sounds like. It’ll only last for that game session, and won’t be remembered when you disband it or log out. It’s free to make a Temporary Posse, however. On the other hand, a Persistent Posse lasts as long as you want it to, but costs $200 in-game. Other than not having to create it every time, Persistent Posses have more options than temporary ones, such as the “Posse Versus” mode. There’s no word yet on whether these posses will last beyond the beta though, as Rockstar has warned all beta progress may be wiped before the final Red Dead Online release goes live.
