With the news that Epic has bought Rocket League developers Psyonix, attention has understandably turned towards a potential Rocket League Epic Store release date arriving in the near future. For those of you wondering when Rocket League will join the Epic Games Store and, whisper it, if Rocket League is leaving Steam, there are a few crumbs of information from which we can glean answers. Read on for a look at a potential Rocket League Epic Store release date as well as the game’s future on Steam.
Rocket League Epic Store Release Date
An official Rocket League Epic Store release date hasn’t been given by either Psyonix (or anyone involved at Epic Games), but the developer’s recent post outlining Epic’s acquisition offers up some hints.
Nothing is expected to change in the “short-term” for Rocket League according to Psyonix when it comes to changing storefronts, but the studio has addressed the”long-term” vision for the title. This will, indeed, involve Rocket League moving to the Epic Games Store within six months.
While the deal between the two parties is not expected to go through until June 2019, an Epic press release makes explicit reference to a “late 2019” release window, stating: “The PC version of Rocket League will come to the Epic Games store in late 2019.” Going by that, it’s hard to see anything beyond a Q4 2019 Rocket League Epic Store release date.
Is Rocket League leaving Steam?
Judging by the current slate of Epic Store exclusives, such as Fortnite, it’s looking extremely likely that Rocket League will leave Steam by the end of 2019.
The aforementioned press release reads: “In the meantime [before late 2019], [Rocket League] will continue to be available for purchase on Steam; thereafter it will continue to be supported on Steam for all existing purchasers.”
Clearly, it’ll be almost impossible to fathom an Epic-owned developer having any sort of presence on a competitor’s storefront, especially as one as prominent as Steam.
