Modern Warfare Gunfight | How to play the new alpha mode

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the eagerly anticipated return of Call of Duty to the iconic Modern Warfare series, but despite being the return of a fan-favorite franchise, developer Infinity Ward isn’t resting on its laurels. There will undoubtedly be plenty of new features alongside returning classic ideas, and one of those features is a brand new type of multiplayer mode called Gunfight. But what is Modern Warfare Gunfight mode, and how does it play? More importantly, is it available to play now?

What is the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Gunfight mode?

Modern Warfare Gunfight mode is a brand new multiplayer mode for online play in the latest Call of Duty game. It’s a very different experience to the type of online multiplayer Modern Warfare fans may be expecting. It’s team-based, but each team only consists of two players on each side. Each 2v2 match requires each team to secure five rounds in order to win the overall match. If players are still standing after 40 seconds in a round, an Overtime flag appears, and the first to claim it wins that round. The minimap is disabled, so duos should stick together and keep their eyes and ears peeled.

An additional twist in Gunfight is that loadouts are randomized. You can get anything from a pistol to a scoped shotgun or even a rocket launcher, and even your sidearm, grenade, and gear can change. Gunfight is all about making the most of the loadout you have and adapting to new ones, or trying to be unpredictable. However, be careful, since you don’t know what your opponents are packing.

Is there a way to play Gunfight mode early?

If you own a PS4, you can play Gunfight mode this weekend as we write this, August 23 to 25, and you can preload it right now. The alpha exclusively consists of five close-quarters maps of Gunfight mode, so you can try the new mode for free. It went live early, so you should be able to play right now.
