Now that World of Warcraft Classic is finally out and people have returned to the “vanilla” WoW of 2006, plenty of fans are wondering: Will WoW Classic have expansions? Despite the Classic edition of World of Warcraft existing purely for those who fancied a return to the original form of the game in all its grinding glory, people have been asking about a potential Burning Crusade Classic expansion and upwards. Read on to learn about any potential WoW Classic expansions and how likely it is that we will get any in the future.
Will We Ever Get WoW Classic Expansions? | Is Burning Crusade Classic coming?
As stated above, the aim of World of Warcraft Classic is to provide a nostalgia hit for those who remember playing the game in its original state back in 2006. While it’s not entirely the same thing, it is a close match to vanilla WoW. This means that it is the original South Park-lampooned version of the game, before expansions such as Burning Crusade took place. What’s interesting, however, is that the developers are adding “new” content into the game through six phases of updates, which will somewhat match updates to the original game, keeping things at least a little fresh.

The six phases are as follows, courtesy of an official Blizzard forum post:
- Phase 1 (Classic Launch)
- Molten Core
- Onyxia
- Maraudon
- Phase 2
- Dire Maul
- Azuregos
- Kazzak
- Phase 3
- Blackwing Lair
- Darkmoon Faire
- Darkmoon deck drops begin
- Phase 4
- Zul’Gurub
- Green Dragons
- Phase 5
- Ahn’Qiraj War Effort begins
- Ahn’Qiraj raids open when the war effort dictates
- Dungeon loot reconfiguration: Tier 0.5 Dungeon gear, Relics, drop rates and location changes
- Phase 6
- Naxxramas
- Scourge Invasion
Despite the fact that these phases of WoW Classic updates are lined up, they don’t change things up as much as the original expansions did. Will we see WoW Classic expansions, though? The developers argue that we may at some point, depending on what the fans want. Jump to around the 44 minutes, 40-second mark in the video below to hear the developer’s answer.
Despite the fact that we could see WoW Classic expansions coming, including Burning Crusade Classic, which would jump the level cap to 70 and introduce flying to WoW Classic at the very least, we’d like to argue that it might be slightly unlikely. WoW Classic exists to take players back to where it all started. If there were to be Classic expansions, there will be a sizeable wait. Who knows how long it will take for all six update phases to take place?
