Destiny 2: New Light throws players into the deep end when it comes to figuring out how to complete many of its quests, but perhaps none are so unhelpful as the Destiny 2 Arsenal of Oddities quest. This mission tells players to search Io and Titan for the Whisper of the Worm and Outbreak Perfected exotic weapons. Despite the its simple wording, finding these exotics is anything but. This Destiny 2 guide covers how to get the Arsenal of Oddities quest, how to unlock the Whisper of the Worm and Outbreak Perfected missions, and how to complete these missions once unlocked.
Destiny 2 | How to get the Arsenal of Oddities quest
The Arsenal of Oddities quest is obtained from Banshee-44, the Tower’s gunsmith. In order to get him to give you the quest, you’ll have to earn enough XP to unlock the Mars destination. Head there and speak to destination vendor Ana Bray. This will give you a quest step that leads you back to Banshee-44, where he’ll give you the Arsenal of Oddities.

Unfortunately, the quest’s wording isn’t very helpful. It tells you only to “Search Titan and Io” for the exotic weapons. In reality, finding both of these exotics requires specific actions to both trigger the missions and complete them, so you most likely won’t find them by accident. We’ll cover the requirements for each below.
Destiny 2 | Whisper of the Worm location
If you head to Io, you won’t just randomly come across the Whisper of the Worm. You’ll first have to trigger the exotic weapon’s mission, and then complete it within a specific time limit.
How to start the Whisper of the Worm exotic mission
To begin your search for the Whisper of the Worm, head to the Lost Oasis area of Io. Wait around in the area for a Public Event to start. The event can be any of the ones in this area, including the Cabal drop pod event. Once it starts, look around the Lost Oasis for a named, major-level (yellow health bar) Taken enemy. This major can be a Taken Fallen underneath a rocky tunnel in the northwest part of the area, a Taken Hive in the caves to the north, or a Taken Cabal to the south. Once you’ve killed the Taken major, a Taken portal will appear on top of a rocky structure near where the Taken Captain spawns. Enter the portal to begin the mission.
How to complete “The Whisper”
Entering the portal puts you into a unique area on Io where the Whisper of the Worm’s mission, “The Whisper,” takes place. You’ll only have 20 minutes to complete this mission. It is possible to complete The Whisper alone, but it’s very difficult, especially if you don’t already have some of the game’s most powerful weapons. As such, we highly recommend bringing a fireteam.
The Whisper is one of Destiny 2’s most unique missions outside of the raids, so if you want to avoid spoilers, take a fireteam of three into the mission for a raid-like experience. If you’re having trouble or want to be as efficient as possible, we recommend watching a full walkthrough as you attempt the mission. YouTuber Pause Reset Play has a great solo guide for New Light players, but it can also be used for those of you bringing a fireteam. Since The Whisper is timed and fairly complicated, you may still have to make multiple attempts, even with a walkthrough.
What is Whisper of the Worm?
The Whisper of the Worm is an exotic, Taken-themed sniper rifle in the heavy weapon slot. It has the unique perk White Nail, which refills the magazine from reserves after landing three consecutive precision hits. This makes the Whisper of the Worm a sought-after exotic for efficient boss damage.
Destiny 2 | Outbreak Perfected location
Both triggering the Outbreak Perfected mission and the mission itself are even more complex and esoteric than the Whisper of the Worm.
How to start the Outbreak Perfected exotic mission
To begin the Outbreak Perfected questline, you first have to head to Titan and speak with Sloane, the vendor there. This will unlock the “Enemy of My Enemy” quest, found in the bottom left of Titan’s The Rig area. Follow these steps to get the Fallen Transponder item:
- At the end of the Enemy of My Enemy quest, kill the Hive Knight and let the Fallen Captain live.
- Return to Sloane and grab the exotic quest for The Rat King sidearm. You don’t need to start this once you have it.
- Head to the now-unlocked door in an indoor area near the southern edge of the platform south of The Rig. You’ll know you’re close to the door when you reach the Tidal Anchor area and come to a rectangular room with large, slanted windows and several Thrall enemies.
- Enter the door (through an opening on the left end of the windowed room) and pick up the Fallen Transponder item, sitting on a table in the room beyond.
Once you have the Fallen Transponder, you’ll need to find its six node data item to activate it. These can be found in the following Lost Sectors:
- EDZ: The Drain
- EDZ: Whispered Falls
- EDZ: Atrium
- EDZ: Widow’s Walk
- Nessus: The Carrion Pit
- Nessus: The Rift
You can head to our all Lost Sector locations guide to find these. If you’re having trouble finding the nodes within each Lost Sector, check out this video from YouTuber 360GameTV for their specific locations.
After finding all six nodes, head to The Farm, a social area accessed through the Earth’s destination map that you may or may not have visited before. Once you spawn into the area, immediately turn right and enter the cellar doors beside the large barn there. At the back of the basement, you’ll find a Fallen Captain crouched behind some shelves. At long last, this will send you to the Outbreak Perfected mission, “Zero Hour.”
How to complete “Zero Hour”
Like The Whisper, Zero Hour is a complicated mission in a unique area set to a 20-minute timer. It’s also very difficult, requiring you to kill lots of enemies, avoid an unkillable enemy, and navigate complex platforming routes. Once again, it’s possible to complete this exotic mission alone, but we recommend taking a fireteam into this unique mission for a raid-like experience, especially if you don’t have some of Destiny 2’s best weapons already.
We recommend following a step-by-step walkthrough, like this one from Pause Reset Play, as you do the mission. Even with a guide, the mission could still take you several tries as you miss platforms or run out of time.
What is Outbreak Perfected?
Outbreak Perfected is a SIVA-themed exotic pulse rifle, introduced in Destiny 1. It has the unique per The Corruption Spreads, which creates a burst of nanites when landing rapid hits and precision kills that pursue nearby enemies. The number of these nanites that attach themselves to an enemy then increases the amount of damage it does to them, which makes Outbreak Perfected a good weapon for boss damage.
