With Captain Price making a return to Call of Duty in Modern Warfare, you might be wondering whether the 2019 version is a prequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. After all, Price appears to be working alone, with Task Force 141 not yet having been assembled. What’s more, at the end of the game (spoilers!), Price requests certain soldiers be assigned to his team so that he can fight a new threat. This new threat seems very familiar, as it’s the enemy that the player fights in CoD 4! So, is Modern Warfare a prequel to Call of Duty 4?

During the final cutscene of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Captain Price requests that Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, John “Soap” MacTavish, and Simon “Ghost” Riley are all assigned to him under the name of Task Force 141. Those who have played Call of Duty 4 will be very familiar with these names.

Rather than the new Modern Warfare being a prequel to Call of Duty 4, it is instead more likely to be a reimagining of that past story. The character names may be the same, but the actual sequence of events may change.
Should we see a Modern Warfare 2019 sequel, the fight against Zakhaev and (presumably) Al-Asad may take place differently. Characters who died in the previous Modern Warfare games may live this time around. Infinity Ward is likely to throw in some twists that players aren’t expecting.
