Is The Last of Us 2 Open World?

No, The Last of Us 2 is not an open-world game. It is, though, far more open to exploration than the original The Last of Us. A good number of the game’s areas you come across are open to explore and navigate, with players able to miss entire combat sequences and story moments

. These are large open areas to explore, bigger than what was seen in the original The Last of Us, but you’re not given free-roam over the map at all times as you are in an open-world game like GTA 5, for example. There will be plenty of tense, linear moments to play through too.

While The Last of Us 2 is not an open-world game, it is bigger than anything Naughty Dog has made before. The open areas you get to explore are larger than they ever have been. As spoken about in The Last of Us 2 Inside the Gameplay YouTube video from May 2020, the level design is, at times, as explained by the co-game director Anthony Newman, so open “that there are actually entire story moments, entire combat encounters, like full scripted sequences, that you might completely miss.”

All of this means that you will need to spend some time exploring the large open areas of The Last of Us 2. If you don’t want to miss anything the game has to offer, you will need to check every nook and cranny. Although not open-world, it’s a big, scary world for Ellie and the gang, that’s for certain.
