Fans want to know when a The Last of Us 3 release date will be announced. The previous game was somewhat divisive, but it’s obvious Ellie’s story isn’t over yet. We’ll take a look at whether we’ll see a third game in the series in the future and what platforms it might release on below.
When is The Last of Us 3 release date?
Naughty Dog hasn’t confirmed that The Last of Us 3 is in development, and no release date has been set. Director Neil Druckmann stated in a podcast in April 2021 that he and Halley Gross have penned a rough outline but that the game wasn’t currently in production.
While Abby and Ellie settle their dispute at the end of The Last of Us 2, there’s still a lot of threads that could be tugged at in that universe. The Fireflies have begun to reform, which might lead them to once again try to acquire Ellie since she is still the only one known to have immunity to the Cordyceps fungi. Her relationship with Dina is also on the rocks after she leaves to hunt down Abby. When the game concludes, we don’t know if Ellie is planning to return to Jackson or if she’s heading out into the unknown.
We also don’t know Abby and Lev’s fate. The two plan to join up with the Fireflies, but is the group actually reforming? It’s possible that the new Fireflies won’t have the same goals as the previous incarnation. Additionally, there are likely slavers like the Rattlers gang throughout the US now that will stand in both Abby and Ellie’s ways.
What platforms will it release on?
Given how long it takes to produce a The Last of Us game, we likely won’t see The Last of Us 3 until the tail end of the PS5’s lifecycle. It may not even release until the PS6 is out.
