How to tame a cat in Minecraft

One of the most popular activities in Minecraft involves settling an area and building your own home. And, for many players, nothing completes the home experience like having a pet cat. Stray cats can be found all throughout the wild, but there’s a special process you need to perform in order to tame a cat in Minecraft.

Minecraft - How to tame a cat

To tame a cat in Minecraft, you’ll need either raw cod or raw salmon. With the fish in-hand, nearby stray cats will slowly approach your character. Once the cat gets close enough, you can feed it the fish in order to tame it.

While that may seem simple, the process can be somewhat difficult. First, you’ll need to catch either cod or salmon using a fishing rod. Catch several, and don’t cook them: You’ll need the fish to be raw in order to lure a cat toward you.

After that, you need to find a stray cat. However, be careful not to approach it too quickly. They’re skittish creatures. A stray cat will run away from your character if you get within seven blocks of it.

In order to lure it close, keep the fish in your hand, then slowly move within ten blocks of the stray. Once at the right distance, keep the raw fish in your hand, then remain perfectly still. Sudden movements could scare it away, and this includes moving your head to look around.

When done right, the cat will slowly approach your character. Once it’s close enough, press the Use button to feed the fish to it. Continue feeding it fish until hearts appear above its head. After that, the stray cat will become a tame cat. It will follow you around, lounge about your house, and even rest on your furniture.

Feeding a raw cod or salmon to the cat again will cause it to enter Love Mode. Putting two felines into Love Mode will allow them to breed, spawning a kitten with the coloring of one of its parents. Feeding the cat fish will also restore two hearts worth of health.
