The NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti released today, filling the space between the RTX 3080 and the RTX 3090. The big question, though, is whether the RTX 3080 Ti is better than the 3090. Obviously, it’ll outperform the 3080, but how does it stack up against NVIDIA’s priciest card?
Is the RTX 3080 Ti better than the 3090?
The RTX 3090 is better than the 3080 Ti, but not by as large of a margin as one would think. When it comes to gaming, the 3090 only beats out the newer card by the slimmest of margins.
The most significant advantage the 3090 has over the 3080 Ti is that it has twice the VRAM at 12 GB vs. 24 GB. However, very, very few games will come close to using even 12 GB of VRAM. This means those using their GPU for gaming will see roughly the same performance from the 3080 Ti and 3090.

Looking at the specs above, it’s apparent that the RTX 3080 Ti is just the tiniest bit inferior to the RTX 3090 in every way. However, aside from the VRAM, the differences between the two are insignificant. When gaming, players would be hardpressed to tell the difference between the two outside of benchmarking software.
When it comes to computing, the RTX 3080 Ti lags behind the 3090 in one aspect: cryptocurrency mining. The 3080 Ti is equipped with a Lite Hash Rate core that limits its ability to mine Ethereum. This measure is meant to curb demand from miners, which should help ease issues with scalping and drive down the astronomical resale prices GPUs have been fetching.
Considering the 3080 Ti (hypothetically) retails for $300 less than the 3090 ($1,199 vs. $1,499), it’s the better value for gaming. Those who can use 24 GB of VRAM may want to get the most expensive card, but most will find that the 3080 Ti suits their needs.
