Modern video game consoles are loaded with wireless technology, including the Nintendo Switch. However, just because it has wireless technology doesn’t necessarily mean you can connect any accessory you like. In particular, the system doesn’t seem to play nice with Bluetooth accessories. Does the Switch have Bluetooth at all? If so, what do you need in order to connect wireless headphones?
Does the Nintendo Switch have Bluetooth?
The Nintendo Switch does indeed have Bluetooth. Wireless communication between the base console and controllers is achieved through Bluetooth 4.1 technology. However, Nintendo Switch Bluetooth does not currently support wireless headphones without the use of a third-party accessory.
Obviously, this information is a bit of a double-edged sword. Yes, the Switch has Bluetooth, but no, you can’t use it to connect third-party wireless accessories. Instead, the system’s wireless capabilities are mainly focused around first-party wireless controllers. Both the standard Joy-Con controllers as well as the Switch Pro Controller communicate over Bluetooth wireless.
How to connect Bluetooth accessories to Switch
If you want to connect other wireless accessories to a Nintendo Switch, such as controllers or headphones, you’ll need a third-party accessory. For controllers, the 8Bitdo Wireless USB adapter is a great choice. It’s compatible with the Switch, and allows you to connect all manner of gamepads. The dongle works not only with 8Bitdo controllers, but also the Xbox One controller, the PS4 DualShock 4, and even the PS5 DualSense.
For headphones, things get a bit more tricky. Different accessories are available depending on whether you usually play in handheld or TV mode. Fortunately, both types of players can use the HomeSpot Bluetooth 5.0 Audio Adapter, as it includes a USB-A converter that lets you use wireless headphones in docked mode. Otherwise, you should be able to use any standard wireless headphone adapter that’s based around a 3.5mm connection.
While the Nintendo Switch does have Bluetooth connectivity, it can’t be used for third-party accessories. Instead, the system’s wireless capabilities are used almost exclusively for Joy-Cons and the Switch Pro controller.
