Is KOTOR on Switch a remake or a port?

A fantasy of many Switch owners became a reality when Asypr announced it was bringing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to the Nintendo Switch. Of course, the game is over 18 years old at this point, which begs an obvious question: Is KOTOR on the Switch a remake or a port? Is it at all related to Asypr’s upcoming remake for PS5?

Is KOTOR on the Nintendo Switch a remake or a port?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the Nintendo Switch is a port, not a remake. It’s being billed as a new console edition of the classic game. KOTOR on the Switch will not be the same game as the upcoming remake for PS5.

While that may seem like a bit of a bummer, it really isn’t. Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, and it deserves to be played by as many people as possible. Having it on the Switch is an absolute win no matter how you look at it.

The only possible downside to this news is also the most confusing fact about it. Aspyr very recently announced that it was working on a comprehensive remake of KOTOR for PS5 (and presumably PC). That’s very exciting news indeed — but that upcoming remake and this new Switch edition are technically not the same game.

Perhaps best of all, this new version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic only costs $14.99. That’s just five bucks more than the game’s current price over on Steam. Considering that some fans said they’d pay full price for a Switch port, this new version can be considered a decent bargain.

Still, don’t go into it expecting to be swept away by updated high-fidelity visuals. Star Wars: KOTOR on the Nintendo Switch is a port, not a remake. Don’t go looking for any special features, either, as the devs haven’t mentioned any extra bells or whistles. The game should look and feel largely the same as it ever did — except now it fits into the palms of your hands.
