Should I buy a Google Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro?

The crew at Google have been working hard on developing the phone we now know as the Pixel 6. Still the company’s flagship, this latest range is something of a departure from Google, as it’s the first to run on the company’s own proprietary Tensor SoC. However, what hasn’t changed is the focus on ease of use and fantastic camera quality. If you’re in the market for a new mobile, both devices look great. But between the two, which one should you buy?

Google Pixel 6 vs Pixel 6 Pro: Which should you buy?

If you want to buy a Google Pixel 6 but you can’t decide between the base and Pro models, think about your camera preferences. The most important differences between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are based around photo and video. Namely, the Pixel 6 Pro has a third rear 48MP telephoto sensor plus an upgraded 11.1MP front camera with 4K video support.

There are a few other differences with the phones themselves, too. The Pro has a bigger 6.7-inch display, running at a higher resolution, with support for refresh rates up to 120Hz. The standard phone only has a 6.4-inch display capable of reaching up to 90Hz refresh rate. The Pro also comes with 12GB of RAM, four more gigabytes than the base model, and has the option for up to 512GB storage. The base model only offers 128GB or 256GB storage options. Finally, Google slightly upgraded the Pro’s battery, increasing the capacity by about 300mAh.

In short, Google made a few specific upgrades intended for more professional users. It’s basically the same thing Apple is doing with the iPhone 13, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max.

Otherwise, the important differences are all down to front and rear cameras. The base Pixel 6 features 50MP wide-angle and 12MP ultrawide cameras at rear, plus an 8MP sensor up front. The Pro retains both of those rear sensors and adds an additional 48MP telephoto sensor with a lens capable of 4x optical zoom. Likewise, the front camera gets an upgrade from 8MP to an 11.1MP sensor which offers 4K@30fps or 1080p@60fps video support.

Google Pixel 6 vs Pixel 6 Pro Differences Comparison

For all the extra screen space, RAM, storage, and cameras, the Pixel 6 Pro will cost you $899. That’s $300 more than the base model, or a price increase of 50 percent. Otherwise, both phones are basically the same: They both run on Google’s Tensor with Titan M2 SOC, both have a fingerprint reader under the display, and both batteries are rated for about 24 hours of use. Both should also represent the quality that Pixel phones have become known for.

As for which one you should buy, that’s easy: If you want a great phone made by Google, buy the Pixel 6. If you want the best phone currently being made by Google, buy the Pixel 6 Pro.
