Is there a way to fix the Xbox “online status unknown” error? It’s a problem that has persisted throughout most of the Xbox One’s life but appears to still be affecting players in 2021, where Xbox Live should be showing that a person is either online or offline but is instead the service is showing as “unknown.” So is there an Xbox One “online status unknown” fix or is it a problem with Xbox Live itself?
Is there a fix for the Xbox ‘online status unknown’ error?
To fix the “online status unknown” error message with Xbox consoles:
- Check the Xbox Live service status page for any problems and either try again later or go back to the dashboard and try to change player status to “online” on the Gamertag.
- Do a hard reset of the console by holding down the Xbox’s power button for ten seconds until it shuts down, then unplug the system from its power cable and wait ten seconds again, which resets the power supply. Reattach the cable, turn on the console, and try again.
- Remove and re-add the profile to the Xbox. Press the Xbox button and go to Profile & System/Settings/Account/Remove Accounts, remove the profile, then go back to Profile & System and select Add or Switch.
- Do a soft factory reset by going to Profile & System/Settings/System/Console info/Reset console, then make sure to choose “Reset and keep my games & apps.” This will reset the operating system only and keep everything added, so any corrupted data will be reset.
If there are any issues with Xbox online services, or if the servers are down altogether, that is probably what is causing the “unknown” online status message so it’ll just be a matter of waiting for it to subside.
