Square Enix has been hit or miss with its PC releases, so fans are wondering if Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a bad port. With the game being a PlayStation exclusive for so long, its PC release is the first time many are getting a chance to play it, especially since there are still PS5 stock shortages. We’ll go into detail as to whether the Final Fantasy 7 Remake PC port is bad or not below.
Is Final Fantasy 7 Remake PC a bad port?
When we initially tested the FF7 Remake PC port, we found it to be well-optimized but lacking graphic options. However, since then, we’ve seen tons of reports of stuttering and other issues that players are experiencing. We also discovered that the game strangely uses a dynamic resolution setting that is tied to the framerate setting.
The latter issue is the most egregious to us. Most players will assume that the framerate setting is simply a cap. Instead, it’s a framerate target, and the game will dynamically change resolution as it attempts to achieve that. Unfortunately, there’s no option to disable this. So, issues can arise if players set the framerate target to a higher number as the game will drastically drop the resolution in an attempt to reach it. Compounding this issue is the fact that FF7 Remake for PC doesn’t have DLSS, which might alleviate some of the issues.
Given the lack of graphics options, complaints of performance issues, and always on resolution scaling, we’d say that Final Fantasy 7 Remake for PC is a bad port at launch. The weirdest thing about all this is that the game runs on Unreal Engine 4, which should have streamlined the porting process.
As of writing, Square Enix hasn’t commented on the state of the port, and we’re not sure when or if an update will be coming to address these issues.
