After joining a Grand Company in FFXIV, players can work their way up the ranks to earn new items and privileges. However, once players hit the rank of Captain, they’ll likely wonder if they’ll ever be promoted above that since it’s not clear what the requirements are to reach Second Commander. We’ll discuss Grand Company ranks below and whether or not ranks above Captain are attainable.
Can you have a Grand Company rank higher than Captain in FFXIV?
As of patch 6.0.1, Captain is the max rank a player can be promoted to in a Grand Company in FFXIV. The list of available ranks are:
- Private Third Class
- Private Second Class
- Private First Class
- Corporal
- Sergeant Third Class
- Sergeant Second Class
- Sergeant First Class
- Chief Sergeant
- Second Lieutenant
- First Lieutenant
- Captain
In addition to these are eight currently unattainable ranks:
- Second Commander
- First Commander
- High Commander
- Rear Marshal
- Vice Marshal
- Marshal
- Grand Marshal
- Champion
Gaining promotion to higher ranks in a Grand Company in Final Fantasy 14 requires players to pay a certain amount of company seals. In addition, for higher ranks, players must also complete quest requirements. As such, obtaining the rank of Captain can be a long process. However, the rewards are worth it, as is the pride from completing such an arduous task.
Square Enix hasn’t given any hints as to if or when it’ll unlock further Grand Company ranks. Only twice in the game’s history have ranks been added. First Lieutenant was introduced in Heavensward, and Captain came with Stormblood. Unfortunately, Shadowbringers broke this cycle, which makes us unsure if Second Commander will come in a future Endwalker patch. If so, players can likely anticipate a small questline around it. As we get toward higher ranks, Square Enix will probably want these promotions to pack a punch, and we’ll hopefully get some new Grand Company gear, minions, and mounts to go with them.
