Let’s talk about the Stranger Things Season 5 release date. We know, it seemed like it was just several months ago that we were trying to figure out the release date for the last season, but with the second batch of episodes released at the start of July, we’re already ready for more. Luckily, we have fairly solid information on when Season 5 is expected to drop from multiple sources.
What is the Stranger Things Season 5 release date?
We expect that the fifth season of Stranger Things will release in mid-2024. While others speculate that we will see a much earlier date than that, including a very optimistic projection of late 2023, a recent statement in GQ from actor David Harbour who plays Jim Hopper in the show predicts otherwise:
I think we’ll [shoot] next year. They’re finishing writing it this year, and they need to prep and stuff, so hopefully it’ll be this year. But I think that’s the plan. So it’d probably come out mid-2024, based on our track record.
This is in step with what the showrunners The Duffer Brothers have stated in an interview with Collider. Ross Duffer said that they were going to “take a little vacation in July” and then head to the writer’s room “in that first week of August.” Given the significance of the final season, they will likely need the rest of the year to prepare the scripts and making sure they have everything in order before starting to film some time in the middle of 2023. A time jump for the characters is expected with most of the teenage actors being well into their college years by 2024.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the showrunners say that while they have the last 30 minutes of the series already cemented in their head, the rest of season 5 is very “blurry.” Matt Duffer elaborated further, saying that he imagines that the wrap-up for the season will be quite long: “It’s going to be ‘Return of the King’-ish with, like, eight endings.”
Beyond that, Stranger Things has a fairly consistent summer release. With the exception of the second season that released on October 27, 2017, the first season (July 15, 2016), the third season (July 4, 2019), and the fourth season (May 27, 2022 for Volume 1; July 1, 2022 for Volume 2) suggest a similar midsummer date for the fifth season. We also expect that the last season will be split between into two parts as well, so it’s possible we see the first set of Season 5 episodes around May 2024 as well.
