Quest 2 Price Increase

Meta Quest 2 Price Increase: Why Will it Cost More?

Meta recently announced that the Quest 2 would be getting a price increase. Both models will jump by $100 soon, which means those who were waiting for a discount are out of luck. Here’s when you can expect the price of the VR headset to go up and why Facebook is doing it.

When are Quest 2 prices increasing?

Why is Quest 2 Price Going Up

The following Quest 2 price changes will occur sometime in August 2022:

  • Meta Quest 2 128GB: $299.99 → $399.99
  • Meta Quest 2 256GB: $399.99 → $499.99

Both headset models will cost $100 more, but there’s a small consolation prize. Anyone who purchases a Meta Quest 2 VR headset between August 1, 2022, through December 21, 2022, and activates it before January 31, 2023, will be able to download Beat Saber at no additional cost.

New units aren’t the only ones that are getting a price raise. Refurbished models are also affected:

  • Refurbished Meta Quest 2 128GB: $249.99 → $349.99
  • Refurbished Meta Quest 2 256GB: $349.99 → $429.99

Why is the Meta Quest 2 going up in price?

Most tech devices start decreasing in price after two years on the market, so the move to increase the cost of the Quest 2 seems like a strange one. In a blog post, Meta seems to hint its because of inflation:

“At the same time, the costs to make and ship our products have been on the rise. By adjusting the price of Quest 2, we can continue to grow our investment in groundbreaking research and new product development that pushes the VR industry to new heights.”

It seems odd that a company that’s going all in with “web3” and “metaverse” products is increasing the cost of the device needed to access them. However, Facebook stock has plummeted, and the company is likely trying to curb losses. The price increase might also be so that its new VR hardware that is due out this year, dubbed Project Cambria, doesn’t look like a terrible deal compared to the Quest 2.
