YouTube has introduced a new quality type in the form of a 1080p premium that purports to have an enhanced bitrate. But what does it actually mean? And what is an enhanced bitrate? Let’s take a look.
What is “1080p Premium” on YouTube videos?
The new 1080p Premium option is an “enhanced bitrate version of 1080p which provides more information per pixel that results in a higher quality viewing experience.”
It’s intended to fix complaints with the standard 1080p resolution and is currently being tested with a small number of YouTube Premium subscribers.
How to get YouTube 1080p Premium to appear
You need YouTube Premium to access 1080p Premium, but you’re not guaranteed to have access to the feature unless you’re one of the chosen few.
YouTube Premium also allows access to offline viewing, ad-free viewing, and several other options such as access to YouTube Music. YouTube adding new resolution options is likely something they’re looking to do in order to increase the value of the subscription service against competitors such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
