The Baldur’s Gate 3 Charred Key is a quest item that can found in the Underground Passage. But it can be confusing to figure where to use the key or what it’s supposed to do. This passage runs beneath Emerald Grove and its entrance is west of the stone gate into town. Once you deal with the goblins insable and disable a few traps, you can leap to the rocky island mass in the passage to find the key on a corpse. Here’s how to use the Charred Key in BG3.
Where to Use Baldur’s Gate 3 Charred Key
The Charred Key is used to unlock the Heavy Chest at coordinates X 426, Y 204, within the Underground Passage.
You’ll need to disarm the chest with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check first before you can claim the contents inside without getting damaged. Using the Charred Key to open the chest will get you a Nature’s Snare uncommon staff, some gold, and 1 Arrow of Lightning.
Where to find the Charred Key
Of course, getting the Charred Key in the first place is easier said than done. You need to disable the Guardian Statues quickly as they can fire projectiles at your party continuously.
After the area has been cleared of goblins, we recommend taking one party member with a good leap distance to hop to the tall rocky island surrounded by cave water. The character will need to hit the Rune of the Wolf button as quickly as possible to stop the Guardian from firing. At that point, it will be safe to loot the Dead Human nearby for the Charred Key.
That said, you actually don’t need to use the Charred Key to unlock the Heavy Chest. Like the majority of chests in the game, you can instead lockpick it. In this case, you’ll need to pass a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check to pick it successfully. Grabbing the Charred Key, however, will potentially save you one set of Thieves’ Tools, which are expensive to purchase at vendors without having high merchant affinity.
